Event Description

The Canadian College of Performing Arts’ “Company C” Studio Ensemble presents the second show of its 2018/19 season, The Penelopiad by celebrated Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood from November 28 to December 1. This dedicated and talented company takes you to ancient Greece to shed new light on the women’s perspective of Homer’s famous legend, ‘The Odyssey.’ Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, and her 12 wronged maids guide you through their side of the story.

This poignant play was first co-produced by National Arts Centre (Ottawa) and the Royal Shakespeare Company (Stratford-upon-Avon) in 2007.

The Penelopiad, as Atwood states, “is an echo of an echo of an echo” of the myths and legends about The Trojan War. She makes a comparison to the modern day show Desperate Housewives, joking that “[with an] absent husband, teenage son giving lip and breaking curfew [and] a servant problem - who wouldn’t be desperate?”

But this isn’t just another tragic Greek play; The Penelopiad is witty, clever and playful. Pure humour and irony perfectly balance out heart-wrenching moments.

The “Company C” Studio Ensemble’s cast presents a predominantly female chorus, amplifying the play’s themes concerning current global issues like classicism, gender equality and harassment. One can draw similarities to the women's movement as well as the #MeToo campaign.

“It’s an incredible piece for young women, and it’s a great experience for both the cast and the audience.” says director Ron Jenkins who is collaborating with choreographer Laura Krewski. He hopes that this play resonates with the audience and inspires them to think about the play’s themes.

Come join the “Company C” Studio Ensemble for a modern retelling of a classic story.

Tickets can be bought online at ccpacanada.com, or over the phone at 250-595-9970.
