About

Night Flight

circa 70s - circa 80s
Night Flight started in 1975 when 16-year-old drummer Barry Balshaw, of the Claremont area, answered an ad put up in a music store by 15-year-old guitarist Mike Woods and 17-year-old bassist Dale Hitchcox: two chums from the Gordon Head area. Within a year Hitchcox was replaced with Barry's friend, Sue Baim, a vocalist/bassist. A year later, Trevor Ferguson was added to the band to play bass and backing vocals, with Sue moving to rhythm guitar and continuing as lead vocalist and front woman.

The band spent the next few years making a living working steadily in the Victoria and South Vancouver Island bar band circuit. They cut two original singles, "Close to You" and "In My Heart," in 1981 in an attempt to attract interest from a record company.

The band's sound could be described as tight, clean, and talented. Some influences on the band were Heart, The Police, and Van Halen. This was especially noticeable in the tight, clean, accomplished guitar playing of Mike Woods.

The band eventually broke up, with Woods pursuing a career as an electronics engineer, and Baim and Balshaw pursuing music careers in Vancouver. Balshaw eventually wound up drumming with many Vancouver name acts including Paul Hyde. He is now retired from the music business and owns and a pet-care business.
