"All I wanna do is share my music with the world, play for millions, and give people the power that music has given me." -Char
At the ripe age of 6, singing along with greats such as Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Willie Nelson and travelling the world with her parents, Char(short for Charlene Birkbeck) got a dose of diversity at a very young age. Growing to love the music her parent's listened to relentlessly, Char's walkman was once her solace. Hypnotic, melodic, shoe-gaze, alternative styles of music have always been her escape from the norm...
After high school in 2001, Char enrolled the jazz program of Applied Arts at Mohawk College, and jazz opened her eyes and ears to playing "in the box" and then trying to get out of it. Char continued to pursue her love affair with music; after many paths she could have chose, the West called to her. Knowing just two people on Vancouver Island, Char took a chance, packed two suitcases, and made the over 3000km trip to Victoria, BC.
Going through various blues, experimental rock, and pop bands for the next 3 years, Char had her own songs she worked on the side and released a solo cd titled "Blame It On The Moon" in 2007; a mix of her shoe-gaze and jazz influences. In September of 2008, Char successfully toured Canada as a solo artist and while doing so, she discovered that looping her vocals and various instruments live at shows helped her create an interesting and unique sound. A sound that she is now perfecting by performing shows throughout Canada and consistently writing on a full-time basis.
Char will be working with Neil Osborne (54-40) in the near future to produce her next album and to capture her best performances in the studio.
