Gomez’ first album Bring It On won the 1998 Mercury Music Prize and is still regarded as one of the best British albums of the ’90s. How We Operate, the Southport group’s latest, is a mature and sophisticated distillation of the mix of rock, blues, folk, and country that is uniquely Gomez. The disc contains some of the best songs of the band’s career, including the rousing pop tune “Girlshapedlovedrug” and the title track (featured in an episode of the TV series Grey’s Anatomy), a fact that testifies to the group’s continued growth and vitality.
Sometimes sounding more American than British, Gomez has become a regular fixture on the music festival circuit and in the last year has played Bonarroo, South by Southwest and Jamcruise. Through numerous tours Gomez has built up a strong following in North America, gaining followers attracted to the band’s new spin on classic (the Beatles, the Band, Van Morrison) influences.
