Since the release of The Clarence Greenwood Recordings, his 2004 sophomore release, Citizen Cope has been one citizen worth watching. The singer-songwriter’s extremely versatile blend of hip-hop, folk, blues and reggae influences turned socially conscious jams like “A Bullet and a Target” into coffeehouse soundtracks both urbane and rootsy. (The track “Son’s Gonna Rise” was even chosen for a Pontiac commercial.)
Recently, the Memphis-born Cope (a.k.a. Clarence Greenwood, naturally) appeared on the track “Bullet” on rapper Rhymefest’s acclaimed album Blue Collar, while his reggaefied take on Radiohead’s “Karma Police” with the Easy Star All-Stars is a stand-out track on the Radiodread compilation. More importantly, Cope’s long-awaited third album, Every Waking Moment, drops in September. And, from the tracks currently streaming on his myspace page, it sounds as though Every Waking Moment is going to take this restless, riveting musician even further, both artistically and commercially.
