Event Description

New North Collective’s Circumpolar Soundscape

Their music is diverse and skillful, representative of genres including folk, traditional, new music, spoken word, and rock in a remarkable collaboration bringing together distinct and highly creative Indigenous artists: Northern Canadian artist Diyet from the Kluane First Nation in Yukon; and Sylvia Cloutier who is Inuk, originally from Nunavik.

These artists are joined by the New North Collective. Together, these musicians explore their ideas of north - from the land to the people; from the traditional to the contemporary. Their shared music focuses on an in-depth look at being a northern person and a northern artist with the impact of change, geography and community on the music they create. The music is diverse and skillful, representative of a multitude of genres include folk, traditional, new music, spoken word, and rock. There is a common goal to discard the stereotypes of the region and the people who live in rural and remote northern communities.

They toured to Greenland in Aug/Sept 2012; were in residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts; toured in Canada to festivals and performing arts centres; and were featured at Northern Scene presented by the National Arts Centre in Ottawa ON.

The New North Collective’s Circumpolar Soundscape is a platform for these artists to disseminate their contemporary cultural music to a global audience. They bring the colours of the north alive as they paint a musical landscape through contemporary song.

For those who have been fortunate to hear their concert, endorse these women and the result of their collaboration.

“The creative talent of these women is a force to be reckoned with. I was awe-struck.” Charlene Alexander, Executive Director, Adäka Cultural Festival, Yukon First Nations Culture and Tourism
