Event Description
presented by Georgia Sitara, PhD.
Join us for a drink (or several) and a whirlwind tour of a history of drinking in Canada. We’ll trace the changing fortunes of taverns, saloons, beer parlors and cocktail lounges from the rise of the temperance movement through prohibition and the successful fight for the freedom to drink. This lecture will be a romp through the complex, rich, and sometimes wacky, history of alcohol, its pleasures and perils, to chart both a wet and sobering history of the changing place and meanings of alcohol in Canadian daily life.
