The UVic Wind Symphony and UVic Symphony Orchestra kick off another exciting year of collaboration, joining together to open their 2023/24 concert season with Unity.
With Wind Symphony works by Kelijah Dunton, Aakash Mittal, Fergal Carroll, Matt Klohs, and a world premiere arrangement of Hikaru Utada's Hikari (from Kingdom Hearts) by UVic Music student Nishant Amatya, this program explores the often difficult and tumultuous bonds humans have with each other and the forces that drive us towards resolution, unity, and the celebration of life.
Conducted by maestro Giuseppe Pietraroia, the UVic Orchestra program transcends time and boundaries through the symphonies of two maestros: Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint Georges and Franz Joseph Haydn. Chevalier de Saint Georges is considered the first classical composer of African descent to receive widespread critical acclaim. His Symphony No. 2 in D is a masterful blend of classical finesse and vibrant melodies, showcasing the virtuosity of the orchestra. Also known as the "Farewell" Symphony, Haydn’s Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor is renowned for its unique final movement – an ingenious musical farewell where musicians gradually leave the stage, leaving behind a dwindling orchestra that eloquently communicates their desire to reunite with loved ones.
