Event Description
Is there a better way to rock a Friday night than with a good dose of FUNK? If you said “yes” then you are wrong, because no, there is not a better way to rock a Friday. Well, except for maybe some capital 'F' Funk mixed with some deep bass world beat and a slice of incredible, independent hip-hop. For Night 2 of Garden City Grooves, we turn to one of the funkiest humans on this or any other coast, SLYNK. A master of good times and ever gooder grooves, Slynk's sets have become the stuff of funky legend – just ask his legions of enthusiastic fans across the country. Pulling from 80s disco, 90s party hip-hop, breaks, Ghetto Funk, drum 'n' bass and everything in between, Slynk delivers the goods with a relentless sense of fun, unending charm and seriously big skills behind the decks. His yearly sets at Shambhala's legendary Fractal Forest have become an annual pilgrimages for funk-lovers from all over. Come see what Slynk has tucked away in his treasure box of musical delights as he takes Garden City Grooves on a funky journey through the sonic cosmos!
Joining Slynk for night 2 of Garden City Grooves is one of the coolest, most unique acts on the west coast, MONKEYDRAGON. MonkeyDragon is the new project from west coast legends Adham Shaikh and Buckman Coe. Featuring the luscious brass of our old friend Harvey Paris and towering trombones of Andy Cakes, MonkeyDragon fuses deep bass lines, world beat sounds and heavy dub with an unbridled sense of fun and sonic curiosity. Few live acts are able to bring people together in the name of Groove than MonkeyDragon. Also on the bill for this Friday night are Victoria's finest purveyors of quality hip-hop, RUZE RECORDS. MCs Brainiac and O P Yeti are two deftest rhymers our city has to offer, keenly observing the world around them while simultaneously digging deep into their own psyches and firing off their findings on the mic with passion matched only by their talent. With their boy Gravy Beats holding down the decks, anything Ruze Records has their name on is guaranteed quality hip-hop. We're also very excited to have our old OKAPI SOUND holding down the decks to start the night and keep the festivities rolling between sets. With an incredibly deep musical knowledge and impeccable taste, you know your ears are in good hands when Okapi Sound is on the 1s and 2s.
