Event Description

The Rabbit Hole is BACK!!!! We're trying something new, but don't worry, we're still bringing you the most amazing artists we can find.

We are pleased to announce the Victoria launch of UVic writing graduate SAM SHELSTAD'S debut book of short stories 'COP HOUSE'; CAIT FLANDERS will be reading and hosting a Q&A for her new book 'THE YEAR OF LESS'; and K'ari Fisher and Susan Sanford Blades will be taking the floor as special guests!

As usual The Copper Owl doors will open at 6:30 with the event starting at 7. A small door fee of $5 will get you past the doorman (it will go to covering the venue fee and all remaining will be divided between the performers). There will be beers and books available for sale. This event is 19+.

SAM SHELSTAD is a writer from London, Ontario. His stories have appeared in The New Quarterly, The Fiddlehead, and McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, among others. He was longlisted for the 2014 CBC Short Story Prize. Of his debut collection Cop House (Nightwood Editions, 2017), Quill and Quire said, “reads like something out of George Saunders. It is precisely this blend of humour and pathos that give Shelstad’s stories their disarming power.” Sam lives in Toronto.
COP HOUSE is a collection of stories about when we desperately try to recapture—or replace—the things we’ve lost. There are secret vacations, library book fetishes, an unusual exchange for protection from teenage vandals, and a doomsday cult operating out of an aquatic centre. An exiled polar bear spies on his old community and fights to survive in unfamiliar territory. A man campaigns to keep the sitcom Friends on the air after the collapse of his family. A masochistic deer wants to feel something other than the slow digestion of cud.

CAIT FLANDERS is a former binge consumer turned mindful consumer of everything. Through personal stories, she writes about what happens when money, minimalism, and mindfulness cross paths. Cait's story has been shared on Oprah.com, Forbes, Yahoo!, The Guardian, The Globe and Mail, CBC News, and more. She inspires people to consume less and live more. Cait lives in Squamish, BC, Canada, with her three loves: the mountains, the forest, and the ocean.
THE YEAR OF LESS is a self-help memoir that documents Cait's life for the first twelve months of her two-year shopping ban. At every stage, she learned that the less she consumed, the more fulfilled she felt. But the challenge became a lifeline when, in the course of the year, she found herself in situations that turned her life upside down. It was then that she realized why she had always turned to shopping, alcohol, and food—and what it had cost her. Unable to reach for her usual vices, she changed habits she had spent years perfecting and discovered what truly mattered to her. Blending her story with insight and practical guidance, The Year of Less will leave you questioning what you’re holding on to in your own life—and, quite possibly, lead you to your own path of less.

SPECIAL GUESTS:

K'ARI FISHER's fiction was long-listed for the 2015 Journey Prize and won The Malahat Review's Jack Hodgins Founders' Award for fiction. Her work has appeared in the Malahat Review and Prairie Fire Magazine. Last year she completed her Master's degree in writing at UVic and she is currently working on a novel and sometimes writes short fiction when she needs a reprieve from it.

SUSAN SANFORD BLADES In May 2016, Susan Sanford Blades completed an MFA in fiction at the University of Victoria under Lorna Jackson’s inimitable guidance. Her short stories have recently been published in The Puritan, Numero Cinq, Grain, The New Quarterly, and Prairie Fire and have been anthologized in Coming Attractions 16. Her first novel is currently in the market for a publisher.

We're so happy to be back in our new book launch form! We have some more exciting events coming your way later this year.

See you all on the 26th! Tell your friends, bring your friends, bring your fam.... hell, bring a stranger you meet on the bus. This is going to be good.
