Event Description

François (Denis Podalydès) is a teacher at the esteemed Henri IV in Paris, considered one of the most demanding secondary schools in France. After an offhand remark at a dinner party, he is transferred to teach in a tough school in the Parisian suburbs for one year. François soon finds that the methods he used to teach bored but docile teenagers, are completely out-of step for a group of disadvantaged students.

Podalydès, of the Comédie-Française, is exceptional as the unadventurous classics teacher while newcomer, Abdoulaye Diallo, displays a winning vulnerability. The real reason to watch, however, is Podalydès who manages to show warmth despite demanding high standards of his charges. As he begins to grasp the challenges his students face, he realizes that encouragement taking the form of irony, humorous or not, is not necessarily the most effective teaching method.

While the main premise focuses on school, Ayache-Vidal adds texture by introducing us to François’ family of intellectuals, where education is something to be savored -providing sharp contrast to his teaching stints. There is a racial and a class element to The Teacher, but Ayache-Vidal’s first feature film creates a fine and thoughtful analysis of today’s education system and in the process, a gentle delight of a film.
