Event Description
Academy Award nominees Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, Blue Jasmine) and Ethan Hawke (Boyhood, Training Day) star in the true story of Maud Lewis, one of Canada’s premier folk artists.
Maud begins the film with few prospects but a tenacious spirit. Cut out of an inheritance by a no-good brother, she lives with her spinster aunt Ida (Gabrielle Rose) in Nova Scotia. The brooding Everett Lewis comes into her life when, seeking independence, she takes a job as his housekeeper. The two quickly come to understand each other. Within weeks, they marry. The marriage allows Maud to pursue painting, and Everett begrudgingly supports her. One day, a summer resident from New York sees something in Maud's paintings and commissions one. Suddenly Maud's pastime is recognized as having real value and eventually her work will hang in the White House.
Sally Hawkins is a startling revelation in her fiery portrayal of an intelligent, independent woman who followed her passion. Hawke and Hawkins display incredible chemistry as the mismatched couple.
Director Walsh is very clear in her direction and doesn’t sugar coat Lewis’ life. Cinematographer Godfree films gorgeous skies looming large over darker foregrounds. And the 10’ X 12’ cottage that Maude used as home and canvas are meticulously recreated.
You will care about the outcomes onscreen and that makes it a magical thing these days.
