"Tanović mixes light and dark, earnest debate and soap opera very cleverly … Death in Sarajevo has the energy and entertainment value of a Hollywood drama." – The Playlist. Yet, that said, Sarajevo is a riveting political tale that takes a satirical approach to a very serious subject.
The manager of Sarajevo's historic Hotel Europa makes preparations for an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination, but the hotel's employees, who have not been paid for months, have something else in mind as they plan to go on strike.
As the arriving EU delegates bring more chaos, the hotel manager Omer (Izudin Bajrovic) soon finds fiendish ways to prevent the strike from taking place. Meanwhile, a journalist, Vedrana (Vedrana Seksan), conducts heated political interviews on the hotel rooftop while a French diplomat (Jacques Weber) rehearses a speech about the centenary of the murder.
Academy Award–winning director Danis Tanovic (No Man’s Land), winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize for Death at Sarajevo at this year's Berlin Film Festival, creates a metaphor on the history that influences Europe today within the microcosm of the hotel.
