Event Description

You are warmly invited to join the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria for its first concert of 2017. The Ensemble will perform an assortment of enchanting pieces from several Hungarian composers and one Canadian composer.

Franz (Ferenc) Liszt was born in 1811 and was recognized as a virtuoso pianist from a young age. He was a conductor and prolific composer whose works are considered to have been very influential on 19th and 20th century composers. His Angélus! Prière aux anges gardiens (Prayer to the Guardian Angels) was dedicated to his granddaughter. This string orchestra arrangement was originally written for a melodeon (pump organ) or piano.

Bela Bartok was a composer, pianist and music teacher born in 1881. Bartok and Liszt are considered the two greatest Hungarian composers and Bartok is thought to have been one of the most important composers of the 20th century. Hungarian folks songs were a significant influence on his works. Bartok’s Divertimento for String Orchestra was his last work, composed just before he reluctantly fled Hungary and emigrated to the United States in 1940 because of concerns about the war and his disdain for the Nazi regime.

Leó Weiner, a contemporary of Bartok, was a composer born in 1885. Weiner was also recognized as a leading Hungarian music educator during the first half of the 20th century. His interest in folk music is evident in many of his compositions including Hungarian Folk Tunes.

Srul Irving Glick, born in Toronto in 1934, was one of Canada’s most prolific composers as well as a conductor, teacher and radio producer. He composed Suite Hébraïque No. 1 in 1961 while living in Paris and feeling nostalgic for his home and family. His father was a cantor and his affinity for Jewish music inspired many of his works.

Conductor Yariv Aloni and the orchestra are sure to provide an entertaining evening of chamber music so be certain to put this in your calendar and tell your friends!
