Each year, the Ministry of National Arts in China would choose top performances and spectacular shows on tour to celebrate Chinese New Year with the rest of the world.
The Red Poppy Ladies’ Percussion Group is China’s number one percussion ensemble, which has been together for 16 years. Over the years, they’ve participated in numerous events including the CCTV Spring Festival gala, the Beijing APEC Assembly, as well as international events such as the Olympics (Athens, Beijing, and London). They represent China’s new generation of female empowerment values, mirroring the same values portrayed in the classic story of “Mulan”.
“Mulan – Percussion Musical” is the first musical theatre performance directed and performed by Beijing Red Poppy, offering a great variety of performing arts, including drumming, dancing, and acrobatic and martial arts. The piece has been acclaimed by audiences worldwide since its creation in 2013. Since then, “Mulan – The Musical” has been performed over 200 times around the world including the USA, England, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Scotland, Kuwait and China. In recent years, “Mulan – The Musical” has toured in the USA and Europe, receiving high praise for the powerful performance and the unique combination of percussion and drama.
The story of “Mulan” is a classic Chinese story known around the world thanks to the Disney adaption of the story aired in 1998. “Mulan” combines the Chinese cultural values of “love”, “justice”, “loyalty”, and “filial duty” into one epic story, which gives the audience a feel for Chinese culture. The nature of percussion music is passionate and powerful. Coupled with the exciting performance by the female artists from Beijing Red Poppy, “Mulan – The Musical” is especially fitting to the original story of “Mulan”.
It is a great pleasure that Ocean Rain Arts Academy has been invited to work with the International Multicultural Development Foundation to bring the show to Victoria, our beautiful capital city of British Columbia. With the support from the General Consulate of China in Vancouver, and a few Chinese local organizations, Ocean Rain is very confident about the success of the show.
