Event Description

Dubbed “Canada’s sweetheart of swing,” Justin Time recording artist Alex Pangman is a gifted vocalist with a real affinity for the music of the 1920s and ‘30s. Channeling everyone from Kay Starr to the young Ella Fitzgerald, Pangman is a musical time machine who brings those great songs to life with all the vivacity and glee you could ever want. Her performance at TD JazzFest in 2012 was truly amazing, and her 2014 album New is full of gusto and grace. Get ready to “swing dance the night away,” when she returns to Victoria! Peter Hill piano, Chris Banks bass, Glenn Anderson drums, Ross Wooldrige clarinet/tenor saxophone
“She roars through a repertoire of vintage swing and blues, possessed by the coltish spirit of a young Mildred Bailey.” – Montreal Gazette

One of Halifax’s greatest exports is Gypsophilia, an award-winning sextet, who start with the gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt and then add elements of tango, klezmer, funk, indie rock, New Orleans, and bebop. The group built a cult-following of dance-lovers by throwing wild 1930s themed concerts in Nova Scotia. Now they are selling out shows all over Canada. They have won numerous East Coast Music Awards, including “Jazz Recording of the Year” in 2013 for their album Constellation. These TD JazzFest favourites bring the guarantee of a dance party. Gina Burgess violin, Alec Frith guitar/percussion, Matt Myer trumpet/keys, Nick Wilkinson rhythm guitar, Adam Fine double bass, Ross Burns guitar/percussion
“Gypsy jazz for the 21st century.” – Montreal Gazette
