Friday September 26th, Garden City Grooves continues with an all BC night of afrobeat, funk and samba with a carnival-like atmosphere. The night begins with an early show (7-10pm) at Distrikt Nightclub (formerly Club 9One9) with Kara-Kata Afrobeat Group (Vancouver), The New Groovement (Victoria) and Masala (Victoria).

A big bonfire of a band by the name of Kara-Kata is currently setting the Vancouver music scene ablaze with its full-power renditions of classic West African Afrobeat tracks and original material. Popularized by the great Fela Kuti, Afrobeat music blends funk, jazz, highlife psychedelic rock, juju and traditional rhythms in a whirlwind of ecstatic sound. The band is jamming the dance floor and getting hips swaying to a frenetic tribal pulse. Kara-Kata’s recent monthly performances at the Afrika Shrine (Legion) on Commercial Drive in Vancouver have been generating tons of buzz and the word is definitely getting out there. Founded by bandleader, Toyinirawo Kayo-Ajayi, Kara-Kata is not just a band but also a community, celebrating and sharing the beauty of African/Canadian multiculturalism with dance, music, and fashion through their live performances. Kara-Kata will make their Victoria debut at GCG 2014 and will undoubtebly be one of the highlights of the festival.
