Event Description

Les Coucous Bénèvoles, one of Canada's leading early music chamber ensembles, explores C.P.E. Bach's influence on Haydn.

Bach's music sometimes seems to skip a stylistic period: it is more in tune with romanticism than with the symmetries and transparencies of Haydn's classicism. The contrast in their styles creates a stunning musical frisson. The concert includes Bach's rarely performed quartets for flute, viola, cello and fortepiano.

The performers are:

Colin Tilney, fortepiano
Elissa Poole, flute
Stephen Marvin, viola
Allen Whear, cello

"One of the most unusual period instrument ensembles in the world."
Rick Phillips, CBC Radio

"There are not many instrumentalists who could capture the musical essence of [Haydn's] Trio Sonata in E minor, or the Trio Sonata in G major as well as Les Coucous Bénèvoles."
Frank Nakashima, The Whole Note Magazine
