The Breakmen:

"The quartet’s original songs twine elements of old-time, folk, and vintage country into a West Coast string-band belt... their vocal harmonies are tighter than a moose’s ass in a Banff blizzard." - Georgia Straight

With the release of their third CD, "Heartwood", on November 7, two-time Canadian Folk Music Awards nominees, The Breakmen, continue their winning streak pushing the boundaries of folk-bluegrass to new heights. Working with renowned producer Bob Hamilton at Old Crow Recording Studio in Whitehorse, they weave touches of soul, classic R&B, and country into their signature roots sound. "Going Back East" has a Blue Rodeo flavour while "Gone" has a roots-rock feel reminiscent of The Band. Fans will enjoy the fat doses of bluegrass and old-time and welcome the band's well-honed harmonies as showcased on "Show Me an Angel". Bang-on musicianship combined with timeless melodies and a sincerity in the songwriting, make "Heartwood" a great listen from start to finish. In "What You'll Find", a father passes along some wisdom to his son, "Take what's yours and nothing more, Treat your lovers right and be kind, Look for good in everyone but be aware of what you'll find." Lee Watson and Archie Pateman contribute all of the songs except one: Mary Margaret O'Hara's achingly beautiful gem "Dear Darling" from 1988's "Miss America". The band kicks off a 20 date tour in Guelph Nov 5 winding through Ontario, Quebec, BC and Alberta. Visit the website to watch the new video and listen to songs. www.thebreakmen.com

The Breakmen are: Archie Pateman, Matthew Lawson, Ben Rogalsky, Lee Watson.

The Shadywood Boys:

Local talent seems abundant these days. The Shadywood Boys are an a capella quartet who perform old-time southern gospel songs. This style carries through the early recordings of bands like The Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, and Flatt and Scruggs. Donned in unorthodox coveralls and bowties, The Shadywood Boys capture the audience's attention and impress with their 1930's "retrophonic", bluegrass-inspired harmonies around a single microphone. One reviewer likened them to the Soggy Bottom Boys of the Coen Brothers' film "O Brother Where Art Thou". The Shadywood Boys are: Phil Shaver, Larry Statland, Tim Cullen, and David Brook.

Jason & Pharis Romero:

In addition to being a singer and well versed in a variety of banjo playing styles, Jason Romero is well known for building much lauded banjos. Each instrument a masterful work of art, his craftsmanship is garnering international acclaim. Pharis (founding member of Outlaw Social) is a powerful singer, songwriter and guitarist; together they perform and teach old-time, folk, old country and original music. Their vocal duets, instrumentals and original music harken to the dawn of the recording industry but stay true to the Romeros' original voices. The duo released their debut CD "Back Up and Push" in July 2010. Driving from Vancouver Island, with stops that included Seattle, Portland, and Oakland, they teamed up with fiddling friends and recorded 19 old-time fiddle tunes with banjo and guitar backup. Now based in Pharis' hometown of Horsefly, BC, the husband and wife team are also two-thirds of The Haints Old-Time Stringband with Erynn Marshall. The Haints' debut CD "Shout Monah" was nominated for not one, but two 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards. www.jasonandpharis.com

Flash in the Pan: "Really great playing and strong harmonies" - Tony Trischka, Banjo Master

Since the fall of 2008, Victoria's Flash in the Pan have honed their foot-stompin' dance tunes and sweet five-part harmonies into their own signature sound. Their performances exude a youthful energy and a love of bluegrass, old-time, country and gospel. What began as a one-off collaboration for a Victoria Bluegrass Association event, has gelled into a 5-piece band that sounds like they've been together for a lifetime. Featuring original songs and old favourites, FITP released a 6-song EP last summer that whets the appetite for fans patiently waiting for a full-length album. Flash in the Pan are: Miriam Sonstenes on fiddle (Backyard String Band, The Sweet Lowdown, Sweet Ginger), Cluny MacPherson on banjo (The Dougs, Neckbeard, Rock Island Ramblers), Kelly Sherwin on bass (The Balkan Babes, Ain't Dead Yet), Jeff Dill on guitar (Sweet Ginger, The Yiddish Columbia State Orchestra) and newest member, Chris Herbst on dobro (The Gruff, The Boot Screefers). All contribute vocals. The wheels are in motion to record a new album very soon.
