Virtuoso guitarist Michael Waters and cellist Allannah Dow describe themselves as ‘prisoners of beauty’. They have each played on a single instrument for over 35 years and will often remark that their shows are just excuses for their two instruments to spend some time together. The resulting soundscape fuses classical and psychedelic themes in an intense devotion to the acoustic magic of these two instruments.
Michael has spent the last several years as an emerging touring artist, after 33 years playing the guitar only as a spiritual practice. In 2004 his deep encounter with the medicine ceremonies of the Peruvian Amazon triggered a sixteen month wave of virtuoso composition, the recording of two CDs and the decision to begin playing publicly. He has since performed in Africa, Arabia, Europe and America.
Allannah spent over 30 years playing cello in a classical and orchestral environment. A spiritual quest and desire to sing her own song gave birth through improvisation and composition, to a new relationship with her century-old cello, Sebastian. Allannah’s voice and cello combine to produce a spontaneous outpouring that carries the listener to the rainbowed heart of the sacred cello
Both musicians describe their musical blending as uncommonly smooth, as if they had been following parallel pathways for 35 years.
“I have never sat down to play with someone and had such an instant sharing of intent and approach,” says Michael. “It’s as if the two instruments decided it would be a good thing to get together, and we just followed along.”
