Event Description

Zbigniew Karkowski (sound artist) and Atsuko Nojiri (video artist) (Japan)
Concert at 8pm, $12/$10
Workshop: Sunday March 1, 11am - 1pm. $8/$5
Open Space. 510 Fort St.

A master sound manipulator, renowned Polish sound artist Zbigniew Karkowski employs a variety of tools to process and rework original acoustic instrument recordings. Continuity demonstrates Karkowski's relentless attention to detail in a re-interpretation the entirety of the Tokyo resident's rich catalogue of work. In addition to his performance with Atsuko Nojiri Zbigniew Karkowski will conduct a workshop and discuss his earlier work and ideas about contemporary composition, and will demonstrate and describe the sonic materials and processes he uses in his current ‘noise’-based work.

Continuity includes visual interpretations of Karkowski's compositions by Japanese video artist Atsuko Nojiri. Rather than simply functioning as graphic replications of the original musical works, Nojiri's visual pieces seamlessly wrap themselves around Karkowski's sounds as though they were integral parts of their own larger multimedia compositions. In the process, Nojiri's videos become independent of the original musical works that they purport to document.

Zbigniew Karkowski studied composition with Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, and Georges Aperghis, and others. His commissioned orchestra, opera and chamber pieces have been performed in Sweden, Poland, and Germany. Zbigniew has lived and worked in Tokyo for the past eight years where he is active in the underground noise scene, and is a founding member of the electroacoustic trio Sensorband. Karkowski is currently on a residency at UC Santa Barbara in California.
