Event Description

Scotland, 10th Century. Driven by supernatural prophecy and his cold-blooded wife, Macbeth, an army general, slakes his thirst for power by assassinating the king and seizing the throne. Rapidly, Macbeth’s regime self-destructs. His mind inhabited by ghosts, and his crown threatened by exiled enemies, Macbeth orders murder after murder. Lady Macbeth’s guilt-ridden psyche implodes. Witches' warnings come true. Finally, exposed and defenseless, Macbeth meets his doom and Scotland is freed from bloody tyranny.
Verdi, the master of vivid orchestration, brings his prodigious expressive power to Shakespeare’s chilling drama of political ambition, madness and the forces of conscience and fate. With a libretto that artfully distils Shakespeare’s poetry, Macbeth is an opera of inspired intensity. Verdi’s searing psychological portraits of the two principal characters are vocal tours-de-force for sensational soprano Jane Eaglen, making her VO and role début, and Metropolitan Opera star baritone Greer Grimsley. Vancouver Opera’s stunning new co-production with Portland Opera and Edmonton Opera features state-of-the-art visual projections by Jerome Sirlin, the award-winning set designer of Broadway’s Kiss of the Spider Woman.
