Rupa & The April Fishes
Few people have put more of themselves into their music thanhas Rupa Marya, an American born woman of Punjab ancestry who spent a lot of her childhood in both northern India and France. Her ethnic identity is reflected in both the lyrics and the textures of her remarkable band, Rupa and The April Fishes. Based out of San Francisco, this gloriously bohemian ensemble brings together elements of French chanson, tango, gypsy swing, folk, reggae, Latin cumbias . . . even hints of Indian raga. With socially progressive lyrics and a circus-like aspect to their on-stage performances, this is a unique and engaging musical ensemble. The April Fishes consist of Mikhael Khalikulov cello, Mario Silva trumpet, Robert Reich accordion, Aaron Kierbel drums and Safa Shokrai upright bass.
