Paper Lanterns are a fun, energetic and disgustingly catchy pop punk band from Vancouver B.C. One could describe paper lanterns as a head on collision between classic pop punk (Screeching Weasel, The Queers, MTX, Ramones) and pop rock (Weezer, Nerf Herder, The Rentals etc). The band draws influences from a wide range of bands, and creates a sound that is both original and full of classic pop, punk, and rock nuances. Paper Lanterns have been an active part of the local underground punk scene since the fall of 2002. In this time they played with local favorites such as S.T.R.E.E.T.S., Billy the Kid and Black Rice and opened for popular touring bands including The Paperbacks, J Church and punk rock legends, The Dickies, and No Means No.
In the fall of 2003 Paper Lanterns completed a successful tour of Western Canada with Painted Youth (The Painted Lanterns Tour) where they found themselves playing shows as headliners and opening for bands such as Winnipeg~s Sixty Stories. Upon returning from tour they finished writing songs for a full length album which was subsequently recorded by Jesse Gander (d.b.s., Operation Makeout, Black Rice) at the Hive Studios. After another year of local shows, the Lanterns did a tour of the west coast of the United States in the fall of 2004. Their album, ~Love, Paper Lanterns~ was released on Throttle Style Records in early 2005.
Currently, Paper Lanterns are playing many local shows and planning a tour for late summer 2005.
