Expressions of Light
From an early age, Nancyanne Cowell began painting our relationship with nature in the dynamic Canadian landscape. Born in rural Ontario and living on Vancouver Island, she is well regarded for her ethereal abstracted landscapes. Embracing charismatic light, her atmospheric paintings channel themes of release and renewal — providing viewers with a rich nurturing experience. Using traditional oils with mixed media, she intuitively explores the modern landscape through glazed patinas of opulent colour, sensuous textures, and exquisite design. With sweeping textures and soft energetic passages, Cowell’s powerful and luminous paintings emphasize how our urban existence is inherently linked to nature. Her work ultimately illuminates the beauty of this relationship. Selected by Canada's Research Chair for sustainable communities (and recipient of the Canada Council Art Molson Prize), a complete series of her paintings is academically published. An accomplished artist, she also produces collections that exhibit in public-legacy galleries for the conservation of nature. Her award-winning artwork is collected in major private, corporate, institutional and public livings spaces.

"As an artist a painting must inspire the senses, deepen the mystery and pull on my emotions. I developed a love of compositions with beautiful use of light. I paint to live, heal and work in harmony with nature in contemporary life. We live in complex times. My landscapes are meditations of nature and unfold our search for comfort and connection. I don't stop until I can feel our souls in the land."
