About

Nancyanne Cowell

ARTIST's THOUGHTS
“Although changing, Canada is still wondrous and beautiful. My studio is on the doorstep of the dark Salish Sea on Vancouver Island in the north Pacific. Home to giant cedars, ancient cliffs and morphing skies. There is a primal, supernatural feeling here. I explore the spiritual realm through nature. Especially, vibrant light moving through the atmosphere. Rendering wax patinas, the light is intended to come from within the painting and inspire the sublime. The paintings invite you to slowly linger and wander through the soft flowing layers and intimate nuances to see into the depths of your own experiences and emotions."

BIOGRAPHY
From an early age, Nancyanne Cowell began painting our relationship with nature in the Canadian landscape. An Award of Distinction artist with advanced studies in philosophy and fine arts, she is well regarded for her powerful atmospheric landscapes of masterful light and composition. Nancyanne Cowell's nourishing paintings are on the front cover of books, illuminate books and her award-winning artwork is collected on the walls of private, corporate and public institutional living spaces.  As a recipient of the prestigious Canada Council Arts Molson Prize, Canada's Research Chair for regenerative communities awarded Nancyanne Cowell for a long-term artist residency and multidisciplinary collaboration — exploring Canada’s rapidly changing landscape through art, love and science.  This resulted in a complete series of Cowell's paintings being academically published, contributing to the cultural and natural heritage of Canada. Reflecting our built environment, she made a revolutionary body of work expressing a love for living things and an inspired vision of the eternal. To cultivate her artistic dedication, the legacy Bateman Gallery of Nature offered Nancyanne formal representation for contemporary exhibits. Amongst the finest artists within the coastal region, she won best in show for outstanding artistic accomplishment in painting.  Cowell also produces paintings that exhibit in commercial galleries and the Federation of Canadian Artists.

BFA (Hon) (Distinct), MBA, LFC, Award of Distinction for painting, University of Victoria; elected member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
