Called “the most important new musician in 20 years” by Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman has gone from tenor wunderkind to a celebrated master of the most iconic jazz instrument. Many years ago Redman was a lawyer-in-training, but when he won the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition he ditched the briefcase and took up the horn full-time. This personable son of jazz legend Dewey Redman became an overnight media sensation, but unlike so many others he managed to carve out a dazzling career. Forget his good looks and Harvard education, Redman has made good on his early promise and become one of those special musicians who regards jazz as something akin to a spiritual calling. With 12 records to his credit, Redman continues to astonish with his ability to balance formal complexity with emotional directness. Indeed, no other jazzman of his generation can match his power or his artistry. Redman hasn’t performed here for five years and it’s great to have him back. His current trio includes bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Antonio Sanchez.
“It’s been a long time since jazz produced a saxophonist with Redman’s fearless improvisational skill and mature melodic sense.” –Time
