“Arguably the most influential jazz guitarist.”—International Herald Tribune
It’s impossible to talk about great jazz guitar players without alluding to one of the genre’s finest—John Scofield. Hailed by Down Beat magazine as “King John,” Sco defines state-of-the-art in contemporary jazz guitar. A trailblazer of ’80s fusion, perennial poll winner, bandleader, master improviser, soul purveyor and funkmeister, and major player on the jazz scene for three decades, John Scofield never fails to generate excitement. A highly innovative player and composer with over 30 album releases, Scofield’s skills have led to collaborations with many major artists. His list of past band mates includes Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Bill Frisell, Billy Cobham, McCoy Tyner, and Medeski Martin & Wood, among others. Scofield has been continually breaking new ground with his inventive trio—Steve Swallow electric bass and Bill Stewart drums—a unit he calls his “A-Team.” His second CD release with the trio called This Meets That (Emarcy) has drawn widespread critical praise. All About Jazz pronounces it “one of the best records of his career…[Scofield is] a man who loves to play the guitar.”
