We all suffer from the over commercialization of our favorite holiday, whether it is Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, or, currently, Halloween.
There are a lot of plastic masks and cheap decorations that can be purchased to create a semblance of spook. However, there are many things far more frightening than bright red blood and plastic zombie skulls with hairy styrofoam spiders crawling out of them.
Most of what is frightening in life is that which one cannot imagine, and the one thing we all have in common - that no one really knows for sure - is what happens to us after we are dead. With the exhibition we are exploring, and even celebrating Death, as an idea, an aesthetic and a narrative, a tie which binds the living, and separates us from that which is not alive.
The Spook Shack has been assembled using mainly found objects of which we created an atmostphere for the art to exist within. Old signage and boards, dusty curtains, an old bureau and plenty of burlap, yarn and loose ends. The overall look is akin to an old study, or an attic long forgotten full of treasures that have been overlooked, and uncared for for some time.
We also want our audience to participate with the show, and have included two major interactive elements.
The Death FortuneTeller, created by Hank Pine, will give you a fortune of how you will die. Reminiscent of an old Coney Island machine fortune teller, it asks for a donation and offers a hint at your demise. Hank has also created the perfect companion publication for his fortune teller, "The Little Book of Dying", an illustrated poem.
Our second interactive project is an ongoing effort to collect memories of the dead in a future publication, "The Book of the Dead". We ask our audience to take a moment to inscribe the name and perhaps a memory of an individual who has passed on who means something to them. Eventually, we hope to see this concept developed as a full publication, but for now we are collecting submissions in a ledger in the Spook Shack for the month.
We sought out artists whose work resonated a feeling of creepy, dusty antique as well as creature features, including a real dead mummified cat preserved by Sarah Clarke, who has also contributed a skeletal self portrait, a few skulls and kitch items from her personal collection.
Photography was contributed by Ariel Rubin, co-publisher of "It'll Happen", a photography zine. We also collected artwork by Vrinda Conroy (Tsunami Print and Sew), Shawn O'Keefe, Christing Dekezel, Steph Harding and Charlotte Walton. Most of the creature contributions are thanks to VenaCava Crafts, who also submitted the Halloween postcards.
So as the veil thins between the living and the dead as we near All Hallows Eve, "think about the unknown and don't be afraid, until we tell you that you ought to be afraid.*
*line from Hank and Lily's song "don't be afraid"

What constitutes a painting? Where does the frame start or stop witheach object, but also within the physical space of the gallery. Also, what makes a painting a painting and does the frame establish a setperimeter? Using black as a way to negate away from the aeseticproperties of color to the viewer. The frame is brought into questionas each object transforms the notion of what a painting is within atraditional sense.

The process and material basis of the pieces try to encourage a visual dissonance between the illusions inherent to painting and the tactile object qualities of the material's applications and usages. At the same time, there is meant to be a cyclic and reflexive relationship between their painted frame and the self-referential materiality; in a sense, aspiring to self-awareness. Ideally, the ephemeral and physical nature of the pieces gives premise to an intrinsic realism.

• For the last 6 years I have been working on a comic book called " Hello,My Name Is B.O.B." I had a close group of artists I made films with at the time and asked them to collaborate with me on the project. After graduating from art school we decided to move to the island to produce a 32 page full colour version of the comic. The comic incorporates an aquatic theme and the islands oceanic surroundings helped us to achieve our visual aesthetic. • We decided to animate the project, and received Canada Council funding to help the project reach its 16 minute goal. We are currently in the production phase. • The show that I am creating at the CAC will incorporate all the elements of the artistic process involved. From the very first scribblings, to polished images.

This set of work continues a theme set forth by a group of paintings done throughout winter. These paintings were based on capturing a moment with a person in the form of portrait. The portraits were surrounded by the ideas and emotions and done visually in collage. Liam has perpetuated this theme to include animals which hold a special meaning to him. This show is based on a naturalist’s field note book. The collages done in paper, ink, graphite, paint, gold leaf show the moment of connection between the animal and the observer which are surrounded by thoughts, feelings and the subconscious.

Artist's reception - Thursday August 7, 5-8 pm In this exhibit, Stephanie Harding explores micro and macro environmental landscapes in oil. Delicate life forms found in the tide pools of Vancouver Island are magnified upon large canvases. These are contrasted by industrial-sized urban subjects painted on petite grounds. Stephanie also shows at La Piola Ristorante, Heron Rock Bistro, the Black Olive Restaurant, Penelope's Café and Gallery 16 1/2. Adrienne Traviss lives in Victoria, BC. She uses traditional oil painting techniques on canvas and board to represent modern themes. Her latest work is a series of portraits and still lifes which investigate the relationship between the natural and technological, and are part of her ongoing exploration of her appreciation of dreamlike moments in waking life. Adrienne was voted by Monday magazine readers as "most promising artist" alongside Caleb Speller and Leslie Wiegand.

Miner’s poly-urethane and paint objects reflect the dislocation between the real and imaginary aspects of the photographic record. Through the process of replication, objects such as the film canister, tongs or dust blower are established as new, but also act as relics of dual points of origin: the dark room, and the mold. While they may create, destroy, reconstruct, and mimic, the objects also force a reconsideration of what role is reserved for them in the production of memory. Dark Room 14 confronts the real versus the artificial, while emphasizing the spaces in which these objects originate. Catalogue with essay by Laura Matwichuk Available Aug 10th.

DIALECTIC Gallery Hours: Fridays 2-5pm and Saturdays 1-5pm DIALECTIC: Through differing means, Jenn Boyd and Evan Locke, construct a reciprocal exchange, acting as a dialogue in a distinctive language. Through a socially discrete variety of language they confront concepts of space and the role of the viewer within that space. Boyd’s work is informed by ideas of the psychological aspects of space and examines the built environment in relation to ones perception of the space our own bodies inhabit. As an extension of her previous work, Boyd’s continual concentration lies in the application of fractured space. In playing with ideas of accessibility via disruptive linear images and layering of physical matter, she endeavors to prompt reflection within the viewer. Here she constructs an occasion for greater awareness of ones own body in relation to daily architectural encounters. Locke’s endeavors, attempt to draw on a material appreciation of the physical properties of space: a constructivist inclination perhaps. Insofar as subject matter, Locke’s current work is based on the idea of urban transmogrification. Everything from the inspired to the absurdly ambitious or just the absurd, is masquerading as solutions to existing and past models of city development; Locke desires to advocate the new works as his two cents on the matter. His paintings are a formal (art) substitution for a series of senseless and fictional suggestions of urban transformation. The processes dictate the compositions, affronting the retinal and physical/tactile with indifference, mirroring his perceived disjuncture between suggestions of urban utopia and feasibility and physically visible present development.

This theme, set in an abandoned living space, is where the viewers are encouraged to search under furniture for hints of the tenant’s character, read privately composed poetry, and look through drawers full of lifeless objects to piece together a stranger’s personality. In this lonely apartment there is a locked room with sound leaking out of it, and a note pinned to the door hinting at where the key is hidden. Behind the door is where the tenant has been hiding away his reality – scenes of brutality, sexual misconduct, relationships with nature, and perversion. Showing as part of the Victoria Film Festival. Opening January 31 6pm

Opening Friday March 27 7pm. The varying degrees of power, wealth and consumption found within societies has led me to document the regression of the human body in my "FatMan Eating" series. "FatMan" sits and eats, gradually growing bigger, whilst continually regressing into animal form. I am consistently adding to my "FatMan" etching series, and presently have 400+ etchings, followed by a three-minute "FatMan" animation. Each individual image in the ongoing FatMan series measures 10 x 15cm and has been produced between September 2008 and February 2009.

It seems strange that the local press kept quiet last month as the announcement of the 2009 RBC Painting Awards, an annuual award of $25, 000 to emerging canadian, brought with it two names familiar to anyone around the local artistic scene. Both native Noah Becker and recent resident Martin Golland have been nominated this year, two of sixteen semi-finalists in three exclusively canadian geographical categories: Western, Central and Eastern. We had the pleasure to spend a month with an original Noah Becker this month and i can personally testify to the ability of his work to impact a wide audience of viewers. Whether it was the elderly art critic who asked "Am I missing something?" or the small child who couldn't stop giggling at the naked bum, "Hell's Half Acre" is more than just it's Boschian / Breuglian veneer.
About the RBC Canadian Painting Competition Established in 1999, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition is a tribute to Canada's artistic talent. The goal of the competition is to support and nurture Canadian visual artists early in their career by providing them with a forum to display their artistic talent to the country and hopefully open doors to future opportunity. An investment in Canadian culture and the visual arts community, the competition will award one national prize of $25,000 and two honourable mentions will receive $15,000 each. Along with past winners, the winning paintings of 2006 will become part of RBC's Canadian art collection comprised of more than 4,000 works of distinguished art collected over the past hundred years. Various paintings from the RBC collection have been exhibited in museums, enabling more Canadians to enjoy these wonderful works. - from rbc.com

With bee-like instinct, these artists have produced striking visual cornucopia, while sketching out their place in other art contexts outside of the studio/hive. Working in media ranging from paint, paper and assemblage to crochet and video, Open Space will be filled to the brim with fustian colour. Ghosts of towers, of spirits that watched the changing seasons flicker. They stood in calm decay counting the years like ripples on the waters surface. As the growl of heavy moteors drew near, new towers came. Eye to eye, these giants of different times looked down at the ir creators, watched the ceremonies below and knew. Sifting influence from the traditional and contemporary arts, abstraction and decomposition, The Woodpile Collective create works that are hightly original yet strangely familiar. opening reception 09/09/09, 7-9 p.m. Robert Amos is renowned as the man who paints Victoria. What most people do not know is that for the past 35 years Amos has been creating a parallel group of paintings using brush, ink and papers from Japan and China. The forms are inspired by Asian art but Amos’s content is as personal as everything else he does. He paints the people and places of this community, imaginary landscapes of rocks and water, and fascinating inscriptions of the writings of his favourite author, James Joyce. His paintings have been elegantly mounted as scrolls by a master in Taiwan. Sixteen of them were exhibited last year at the Prince Takamado Gallery in the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, and drew admiring comments from the Japanese audience. Now Eclectic Gallery of Oak Bay (2170 Oak Bay Avenue, 250-590-8095) presents 50 of these scrolls, for the first time in Canada. Amos has this to say about this unique project: “The materials of Chinese and Japanese art - ink, brush, paper - are the most expressive mark-making tools mankind has devised, able to record the slightest tremor of the soul like a seismograph. Though I am not Chinese or Japanese, I have found that brush and ink respond to my intentions with unmatched sensitivity. I have always avoided the typical subject matter of Asian art (bamboo, birds and flowers) choosing to tell my own story in my own language, yet I find the Eastern forms irresistible. “For many years I have ground ink and written out my visions with a supple Japanese brush, creating hundreds of “on the spot” portraits and building up dozens of patiently-invented landscapes. These explorations have inevitably led me to cultivate my own calligraphy (in English) and to carve my own seals (in stone). “The artists who inspire me are both ancient and modern, met with in galleries, in books and in person. I continue to be amazed that no one else on this side of the Pacific has availed themselves of the Asian forms to express a Western sensibility. Our coast, so rich in rocks and water, is eminently adaptable to expression in ink, has never been conveyed by “the way of the brush”. Until now. for more information call 250-590-8095 or visit www.robertamos.com

Noon on Wednesday, September 9, in front of the offices of BC Arts Council, 800 Johnson Street.
The announcement made in BC on 28 August 2009 that Direct Access Gaming revenues were being slashed rippled through arts communities across Canada, echoing a ripple that ran across the country when earlier this year cuts of 40% were announced to the BC Arts Council.
Early last week the provincial government announced a partial-and what many expect to be temporary-reinstatment of funds to gaming clients that had pre-existing contracts. However, many organizations are still facing funding shortfalls that will impede their ability to function in the short-term, and a large number of organizations are still unclear about what the future holds for them. Artist-run centres have been hit particularly hard as many did not have multi-year contracts. Some of these centres will close their doors, as seems the fate of Vancouver's Helen Pitt Gallery. Others will proceed with significantly reduced programming, which will then affect their ability to fulfill the terms of their grants with other funding bodies such as the Canada Council, thus jeopardizing their support from other sources.
According to Spencer Herbert, MLA for Vancouver-Burrard, 85%-92% of core provincial funding for arts and culture will be cut by 2012, from both tax-based and non tax-based [gaming] streams, including a devastating cut of 40% to the BC Arts Council's operating budget. Herbert quotes the following figures:
Total support for arts and culture organizations in BC from 2008-2012, including all sources (Gaming, BC Arts and Culture Special Endowment, Direct taxpayer investment) are:
2008/2009-47.8 million
2009/2010-42.219 million (as of February)
2009/2010-23.075 million (suddenly, as of September)
2010/2011-3.749 million
2011/2012-3.675 million
BC's per capita arts funding has long been near the bottom compared to other Canadian provinces, and BC is the only province to cut cultural funding as a result of the economic downturn. It is puzzling indeed to try and understand the motivation of the BC Liberals when even their own statistics show that for every government dollar spent, $1.38 is cycled back into the economy through tax revenues.
Further, during 2009's provincial election, the BC Liberal's official platform stated that, "In the new creative economy, art, theatre, culture, sport, design and other creative enterprises are integral components of a thriving technology industry and a vibrant society that can attract and retain highly skilled workersŠOur film, visual, and musical arts communities help define a rich cultural diversity and vibrancy that always puts BC in a great light internationally." Given the imminent arrival of the Olympics, it is bewildering why the provincial government would choose to so seriously impair their arts and cultural communities.
Regardless of these facts, the importance of the arts should be recognized beyond its contribution to the economy. Government funding for the arts is essential for nourishing artistic freedom and creativity, which in turn stimulates an understanding of diversity, inclusiveness and social awareness, all qualities that have defined our nation. The arts play a vital role in shaping and giving meaning to individual lives and culture in general, but also contribute to the imaginings of possible futures for a society. If the BC Liberals are allowed to demean the arts in the manner they have proposed, the social fabric of their province will surely fade to grey.

Opening Reception Friday December 4, 5pm-10pm Intimate viewing hours: Wednesdays and Saturdays 12-5pm. From the Street: 24/7 Ad-Hoc Trajectories is a sculptural metaphor for the process of developing meaning or purpose from an otherwise chaotic background of experience. Small staircases, bridges, and boardwalks are used to take the form of linear trajectories, which are built upon a chaotic interconnected ad-hoc matrix of the same substances filling the gallery space in an immersive installation. Inspired by the post-modern philosophies of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, this work attempts to connect the concept of acquired experience as a perpetual trajectory within the classical duality of order and chaos. The defining of the linear trajectories is to compare the elements of order verses disorder, by putting into question the validity or purpose of such trajectories when based upon a chaotic but stable support. This piece is intended as a critique of the validity of inherent meaning, purpose and goals which are derived as linear constructs, or are considered quintessential within the movement of an ordered trajectory or otherwise put as part of a discernible experience. This work will be installed at the Fifty Fifty Arts Collective, December 4-25th, with the opening reception December 4, 5-10pm. Cupcakes and light refreshments will be served. also see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fl1yHpbR0o

152 West Hastings is an artist studio in the DTES, a neighborhood experiencing gentrification. The studio, located across from the new Woodward's development, is one of the last buildings on the block that has not been renovated. In an uncertain environment its young artists seek to carve out their space and persist in creating innovative artwork. They are friends of varying backgrounds and represent different schools of practice. John Burgess is a multidisciplinary visual artist currently living in Vancouver. His focus has been on large scale installations, and recently a return to painting. Burgess has exhibited in Australia and Canada and finished his BFA at Emily Carr University 2008. Jesse Corcoran, an artist from the DTES of Vancouver was initially influenced by graffiti artists and his friends. The adventure and exploration of the city fuels his continual need for expression. Branching out into more formal forms of art such as photography and drawing have since become a big part of his work but evidence of his root inspirations remain. In April Jesse's work will be showing in Victoria, Toronto and Finland as a part of various group shows. Morag Kydd received her BFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University in Montreal QC and has exhibited her work in Canada and the U.S.. Morag makes lyrically intricate illustrations, strange landscape paintings and invented scenarios. Her photography practice explores the notion of home, noting strange debris and the sculptural events made accidentally by man and nature alike around her neighborhood. Graham Landin is a self taught and largely intuitional artist. Graham's work is motivated by a desire to encounter something new. experimenting with concepts of space, inventing games and working towards fusing art and sports. he enjoys an odd conspiracy theory and loves to romanticize. He's a Virgo and he likes jokes. His work has been exhibited in Canada and the U.S.. Gabrielle L'Hirondelle is a Metis multimedia artist raised on Coast Salish territory. Her work explores the low arts of comic books, zines, funny drawings, and home movies. Andrea Lukic is a Vancouver based artist and musician currently working in sculpture and collage. Her practice investigates particular projections of identity through various forms, from flags to frightwigs and packing materials to video. Andrea is presently finishing her BFA at the Emily Carr University. Anna MacLellan creates curious collages and peculiar works of art. She acquires her art supplies from alleyways, garage sales, flea markets, friends and random people. She often enjoys challenging the social conditioning that tells us to look at but never touch artwork. Some pieces are interactive and the viewer who indulges their curiosity will be rewarded with something pretty neat. Anna grew up in Ottawa and the Pontiac, but now lives in Vancouver. She is happiest when she eats pie. Ben Marvin moved to Vancouver in 2007 after being raised in Calgary, Alberta until the age of nineteen. With a focus on photography he is fascinated with a haunting depth found in the simplicity of portraiture. This fascination with simplicity and complexity in banal imagery is a theme throughout the rest of his work. Les Ramsay is an artist based in Vancouver, Canada. His diverse studio practice incorporates painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, photography, and printmaking. He received a BFA in visual arts from the Emily Carr University, and also studied at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain. His work has been exhibited in Canada, Spain, and the United States. Alex Stusberg, aka "Teddy", is a self taught acrylic painter and illustrator. His paintings and drawings celebrate juvenile optimism and innocence, juxtaposed with the worries of an adult mind. Stursberg is influenced by tribal art from around the world, his friends and peers, and the cartoons and comics of his childhood. Kara Uzelman, With an educational background based in urban planning, fine arts and archaeology, I have developed process based, site specific works, focused on the rehabilitation of the objects and artifacts of my surrounding environment. A long-standing tradition in Chinatown, the MAY OUI! show is the 30th annual group exhibit of erotic artwork by a growing sea of Victoria artists. Three decade past, founding artists JC Scott and Andy Graffiti started the show as a gathering of friends and colleagues at the Brand New Era Social Club, on Fisgard at Fan Tan, a second floor artist & musician live/work studio. Initially, the show acted as a venue for this theme of erotic work that most artists explore at some point, but don't often include in their exhibitions. The show became an event for artists to meet and share their ideas, a more social venue than a formal art exhibit. Over the years, the theme has passed around the art community, some remember the Freedom-Erotica events at Xchanges, and the show has found yet another new venue, back in Chinatown, at the Boucherat Gallery. A wide range of styles and artists will be presented in this salon-style exhibit featuring all mediums of work and a great cross-section of the Victoria art community.

Her current project, Mirror Extension Series, explores the correlations and tensions of body-senses and emotional experience through post-industrial materials, mixed-media collage; collage as virtual theatre whose part of narrative is of a female navigator who navigates the external world with her armour made out of flowers, grass without compromising her femininity/true nature. Another component of the narrative is Galaxy Express 333 To The Future Series, which is sort of a map-like guide for the navigator. ARTIST STATEMENT High of Musicking is about the synchrony of rhythm & emotion experienced through participating in any musical activity like playing musical instrument, dancing to the music, singing to the music, or listening to the music. The piece could be almost called Runners High since I feel it's the same thing in terms of the sensation felt in your joints feeling so loose and light that it seems as if you could fly over the ocean for instance.

'HERSHE' - An Invitation Having kept company with Frank Torng for the better part of a year (we shared a studio,) I have witnessed his formal decision-making in showing this work. A photographer’s studio is not where the magic happens. It is where the work is assessed, re assed, criticized, cropped, and shifted. Discussions take place on framing and format, narrative vs. abstract theme, portraiture vs. documentary impact, scale, color vs. black and white, etc. etc. These formal post shoot decisions are about showing the art. The appropriation has happened. The moment has passed and the images have been captured. Now how do we relate to it? The relationship between sharing art and viewing art begins. Torng works both in digital and analog (yes, he shoots film in nightclubs). There is something about both of these photographic methods that is incredibly seductive. Digital photography allows for a pleasant instant gratification, where as the romance with film involves a bit of a tease. You just never know exactly what you are going to get, kind of like Torngs photographs. Some are colorful clean portraits, and others are textured documents of a moment in time. Putting these two methods together Torng has a strong collection of images of his friends. His majority of friends, are as Torng puts it, a “third gender.” Better known as Drag Queens. The best two words I can think of to describe Torngs photographs are 'Fucking Beautiful.' I’m not using either of these words casually. Words are sometimes an unfair way to describe a visual experience. However these are fitting words considering Torngs work is about sexuality, vanity, relationships, performance, and family. In each pictures essence is a glimpse of what is means to be human; 'Fucking Beautiful.' Torng has been invited backstage. It is his favorite place to capture images. Or, maybe better put, Torng didn’t need an invitation; this is where he has grown up. The work is done (for now), and Torng would like to invite you to see his art. He is showing in his current hometown Victoria, B.C. and soon in Montreal, Que. Please join us to experience the pleasure of viewing some fucking beautiful photographs. - Kyra Kelpin The exhibition runs from June 03rd until June 24th, 2010. Artist InfoOpening Reception Thursday July 1, 7:30 pm If You See It, Say Hello is a new collection of paintings, prints, and illustrations by Vancouver based artist Scott Lewis. Within these works we see Lewis digging into the history of an industrialized civilization. His own memories of growing up in rural western Canada are infused with its overwhelmingly vast landscapes. These memories coupled with his own personal struggle to justify mankind’s unsustainable path within it conjure up themes of death, religion, innocence and the supernatural. This is Lewis’ first show in two years and first ever in western Canada. Scott Lewis was born in the grassy plains of Alberta and raised in the mountainous ranges of B.C. He dabbled in post-secondary studies at UBC, Emily Carr University of Art, and Concordia University in Montreal. During his five-year stint in Montreal he founded and ran a record label called Storyboard, releasing music by bands such as Ladyhawk (Vancouver), Quest For Fire (Toronto), Spider/Jane Herships (Brooklyn, NY), People for Audio (Montreal), and Bend Sinister (Vancouver). He was also a founding member of the rock and roll band, Barn Burner, on Metal Blade Records. Now residing in Vancouver, his art practice has seen a shifting emphasis on painting, photography, and video. He is currently working on a new series of oil paintings, prints, and illustrations for an upcoming solo show.

OPENING RECEPTION @ REGALIA BOUTIQUE, 16 Fan Tan Alley JULY 2nd 7 - 10pm
Lara is a recent Bachelor of Arts graduate from Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. Her academic focus was a combination of psychology and visual arts. She currently works out of her home studio, located in Yellowpoint, British Columbia, producing an array of mixed media pieces that involve texture, collage and colour washes.
This exhibit marks Lara's debut to the Victoria arts community. It will be a culmination of her latest works from the Thread&Paint Revolution series which are an exploration of complimentary and contrasting media. Each piece attempts to draw attention to the contradicting effect of soothing traditional textiles and unsettling figurative images, reticulated within a labyrinth of thread and paint. Artist InfoScott August is a British Columbia based artist whose work often questions the relationship between man and nature. August’s work is primarily made up of montaged photographic images, often using unusual toys, found paintings, taxidermy, and awkward images of himself as the subject matter. By using printed backdrops, costumes, miniatures, and objects from nature, August utilizes digital technology only as a production tool, he ...focuses on creating work that is more timeless and aesthetically traditional then the work of his generation’s many other digital artists. The exhibit "Found Landscapes: Interventions in Nature" is a collection of large scale canvas prints which have been produced over the last six years. The earlier work includes The Lobster Series, four sequence shots of an over confident lobster costumed beach goer as he struggles in his natural surroundings, known as the lake. The 2005 work entitled !Summerland! is August's depiction of a rare and elusive woodland party with a strange guest list (an overexcited bull, a friendly bighorn sheep, a pair of odd otters, and a bitter fox). The complementary work !Winter!, paints a story which is bleak and disastrous, proving once again that an unprotected above ground hibernation is not often a wise decision for our warm blooded buddies. A newer work, entitled Bear Peeking Over Mountain Gets New Cowboy Friend, documents a twenty-two foot tall photograph of August (dressed a cowboy) awkwardly engaging himself with a large wooden bear billboard (a popular 1980's folk art landmark ) on a hillside above the sleepy town of Keremeos B.C. This work is the first of a new series of work (or elaborate pranks) he is proposing to execute in regards to public art and large scale roadside attractions. About the artist: After studying traditional photography and printmaking at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (Kelowna, BC), August received a BFA (with Honors) in 2002. His work has been exhibited at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art (Kelowna), the Kelowna Art Gallery, the Café for Contemporary Art (North Vancouver), the Three Walls Gallery (Chicago) and the Pop Montreal art and music festival (Québec). August is also a musician, solo under the name French Paddleboat, with records on Scratch Records (Vancouver), Catsup Plate Records (New York), and K-RAA-K (Belgium) as half of Vote Robot. His own label released early records by Destroyer and more recently two new side projects by members of Vancouver's Ladyhawk (SPORTS and Duffy and the Doubters). August hates writing about himself in third person and hopes someone else will one day take interest and do this writing for him!

Laura Bifano grew up on the very damp east coast of Vancouver island where she spent the better part of her childhood drawing demented pictures for the entertainment of friends and family alike. Her paintings range from being whimsical and lighthearted to macabre and subtly disquieting. Her characters exist in their own quiet world, immediately accessible and distant. Educated at the Alberta College of Art and Design, Laura has worked as a concept artist, storyboard artist, and editorial illustrator. She now lives and works in Victoria, BC. She enjoys surrealist paintings, graphic narrative and making pictures.

Artist InfoBoth fourth year students at the University of Victoria, Henry Slaughter and Kyra Kelpin have found common interest in process and output. While Henry’s submitted work is based abroad, Kyra’s is based locally, and they have found similarities in subject matter and composition; the differences lie in the atmospheric quality and feelings of nostalgia. Henry ...Slaughter's photography stems in large part from his sense of design and knack for clean composition. Interested in unique portraiture and capturing people in their immediate landscape, everything is shot on 35 mm film with a fixed 50 mm lens. For this series, he collected a large portion of travel photos from the Middle East, Europe and New York City in attempts to compare and contrast Kyra’s collection of photos taken in British Columbia. Images captured for this showing of Kyra Kelpin's work were all shot in the winter and spring of 2010, between and around Tofino and Victoria, BC. This show references the spaces and landscapes that are inhabited and viewed in our daily lives. Her personal perspective and choice of subject matter is derived from the visual experiences that are deemed valuable in appreciating and valuing the island where she resides. This work is based around her home, and ongoing. Current images are shot with a Kiev 88 medium format camera, and edited with the intention of leaving some of the “quirks,” inherent with shooting film photographs EXTENDED GALLERY HOURS FOR THE OPENING THURSDAY AUGUST 26TH: 1PM - 8PM CLOSNG RECEPTION: SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 11TH, 7PM - 11PM

Tani Hamagishi-Allen studies at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, British Columbia. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with a double minor in visual arts and business. Since November 2008, Hamagishi-Allen has been producing mixed-media collage as a series called Porcelain Dolls, the latest installment of which will be presented by Boucherat Gallery this fall. In addition to her participation in a series of exhibits with Boucherat & Studio 16½, her work has also been exhibited at the Nanaimo Art Gallery and the One of a Kind show in Vancouver.
Artists Statement
Tani Hamagishi-Allen has been developing a series titled Porcelain Dolls, which originated as a response to her role as a consumer. In these works she seeks to increase the appreciation of materials that would typically be experienced through impulse and disposal. Her manipulation of collage and illustrative elements is an attempt to transcend the fundamentals of their construction. She strives to make each Doll precious in its own way.
An interest in conventions is also evident in this series. Tani enjoys the challenge of working within confines. She finds the outcome of repetitive acts to be a great source of inspiration. Native art, in particular, has greatly influenced this perception. She appreciates how certain techniques, such as the ovoid or form line, are consistently used yet continuously reinvented. In her works, she considers collage elements and illustrative, organic shapes to be the conventions. She believes that by designating herself a theme her creativity is pushed to further itself.

Artist InfoValid Perspectives - A group photography show Portraits conveying the lifestyles of today's youth. Valid Perspectives is a collection of portrait based photographs that convey a commonality between subjects through their surroundings. All artists are Victoria based, under the age of twenty-five, and range in levels, although most are of amateur experience. All featured photographs were shot on film in both 35mm and medium formats. Valid Perspectives’ pieces are an examination into the artists’ immediate personal lives, yet all capture similar trends as they work towards an investigation of Victoria’s social scenes/climate. These works help us understand how individuals comprise a social network. Each artist emulates one another by capturing different sides of their subjects, some of which may invoke repetition, yet unique to the individual artist, making each photograph personal to the relationship between the artist and their subjects. Show includes photographs by: Sarah Strohan, Georgia Graham, Caroline Hughes, Mieke Van Delft, Jason Lei, Simone Rochon, Melissa Paget, Kyle Plantinga, Simon Bergink, Scott Bell, Chloe Shubert-Harbison, Melissa Edwards, Robert DiNinno, Sara Ponchet Show runs September 23 through October 14. Artist Info"Shannon Scanlan’s The Blue Room, a sculptural installation at the 50/50 arts collective is not only about the implications of the colour blue. Nor is it only a vacancy, a basic dullish cerulean blue room that we enter. The gallery anteroom or main space becomes the preface to a story, until we chose to cross to the other side. Because Shannon challenges us, creates a narrative with a path to follow, a journey to undertake, a discovery to make. We need to transverse and duck string strung across the width of the gallery, to follow the prescribed footpath she has demarked. Be in danger of distraction by blatant signage, an Albers-like 2-tone squared centre that encompasses an entire South wall, forcing our diversion from the final destination. If willing, we need to find a channel within the strung string, sectioned for relief or temporary repose. Become frustrated and free when we cross a river of string hung too low for consenting adults to cross without circumventing by stooping, lowering ourselves." read more at exhibit-v.com

Duck Memorial Gallery by Samuel Garrigo Meza On April 28, 2008, one thousand six hundred and six ducks, mallards and buffleheads, landed on the Aurora tailings pond, a lake of toxic waste and contaminated water, the residue from oil sands mining operations; most of the flock died within minutes. The Duck Memorial Gallery consists of one thousand six hundred and six origami ducks folded from 5” squares of coloured paper – five being the number of surviving ducks. Folding began on Remembrance Day, 2009, and was completed on April 28, 2010, the second anniversary of the ducks’ death. Instructions on how to fold a Memorial Duck, along with origami paper, will be supplied to visitors at a small table set up in the gallery. A jar of tarsand, upon a plinth, will also be part of the installation. A minimum of 60 duck-shaped gingerbread cookies will be supplied for the opening reception. The latest exhibition of works by local artists Lara Scarr and Tani Hamagishi-Allen. After meeting in art school years back they have shown work together throughout Vancouver, Victoria and mid-Vancouver Island. Despite working independently of one another, from their home studios, they confess a shared love and appreciation for mixed media arts. Both have been exploring this medium through directiv...es in their latest series. Scarr has been developing Thread&Paint Revolution which integrates the use of stitching, collage and paint washes. The imagery selected in her work offers an air of eeriness and humour. Scarr has a sensibility for combining elements that may appear familiar but leave an uncertainty when the totality of the piece is being considered. Her use of line and texture offer a visual labyrinth for the eye to get lost in. Simultaneously, the tactile quality of her surfaces speaks to the sense of touch that can’t be satisfied as each piece exists behind glass and frame. She self professes a thrill for the “strange and unknown” and thrives to break stereotypes associated with the media of art. Hamagishi-Allen works within a similar but different ideology when creating her latest series the Porcelain Dolls. Many of the pieces in the series compositionally use both collage and illustrative elements. This repetition addresses the awareness of an obsessive tendency found within her. She speaks of her artisitic process in terms of self assigned confines from which to create multiples not duplicates. Hamagishi-Allen especially enjoys the effects that form and colour have and utilizes such in her work. When composing her pieces she simplifies collage down to “coloured shapes” and builds both the surface and the image around that. In doing so, she attempts to disguise their origins by altering their context and usefulness. Both Scarr and Hamagishi-Allen play in the world of abstraction and alteration. They enjoy the range of responses and interpretations that such curiosities bring. To them, that’s the inspiration. Aaron Rosner is a self taught artist who lives and works in Victoria. He has self published a number of zines and comics and his mediums include illustration and diorama-like sculpture. "Aaron lives in Victoria, where he draws pictures and makes little things." "I like baking biscuits shaped like shortbread cookies when I get the chance." he says of himself. Eating pizza and romantic walks to the fridge are always possibilities with Aaron. He lives in a cool neighbourhood but they cut down all the trees next door and made a concrete wall. "I really want to make an impact." he says when queried about an ugly nail sticking out of the gallery ceiling. "That's what matters, and hey, I have several hammers; We can all use them and turn this shitty task into a piece of cake." He drinks tea and beer, etc. In "Little Things" Aaron creates a world of character driven chaos, charisma, and charm. It is truly a glimpse into his brain and a feast for the eyes. Lindsay Cooper is a Victoria-based artist and treasure huntress with a flair for fashion and the heart of a lion. Born in Calgary Alberta, she was raised with the simplicity of the prairies as inspiration. Lindsay obtained a B.F.A in Visual Arts from the University of Victoria with a focus on painting, and digital video production. Following graduation, her creative focus switched from painting to drawing after being inspired by the works of Albertus Seba and James Audubon. "Little Things" is a collection of new works which depict the delicacy of natural objects and their repetitive nature. Feathers and ferns are used in an intricate way to show both the movement and intimacy of line and form. Mid-show reception is held on May 20th from 7-10pm. There will be refreshments, artist prints, an antique toy machine, and freebies!

They appear laughing and bickering, en mass. They pull one another’s hair and bite at rocks breaking their teeth. They are hungry and naked, gendered and yet sexless. They say,”ha-ha!” and “oh no!” Haha Ohno is a narrative drawing exhibition, the scenes represented there-in serve as a vehicle to explore basic social dynamics and practices. The characters inhabit a world emptied of living culture but littered in its detritus. Their attempts to engage with their surroundings result in absurd and grotesque situations. In some instances the characters are left to decode the meaning of the objects they encounter, often imbuing the objects with new or alternate purposes. In other instances they intuitively engage with the space or object on its own terms as if possessed by its history. The characters of course have no sense of or reverence for history, they cannot conceive of anything but their immediate experience which they can only qualify with “Ha-ha” or “Oh-no.”

The current exhibit is closed until we find a new artist. On Saturday our 1-4PM volunteer arrived to find an empty gallery. The artist had come earlier in the day and removed all of their sculptures. We were very surprised by this as the artist did not provide any explanation. No notes, emails, phone calls. No sign of them being disgruntled or upset about anything. They just left.... So... the exhibit Cultivating Materials of Confectionery Persuasion by Kuh Del Rosario has been cancelled. We are now looking to fill the space. If you know anyone that would like to install a show last minute, send them our way. Our gallery is booked months in advance so this could be a great oppurtunity for someone to get their foot in the door. We will update everyone as soon as we know who will be taking Kuh's place. Thanks very much for your time.

BABY GUN Artists Statement by Luis Enrique Oliver Baby Gun is a series of paintings about our imbalanced development, the discrepancy between our material progress and our evolving consciousness as a species. Our technological evolution has far outpaced our social/spiritual development. We have the capacity to communicate with each other in previously undreamed of ways, of manipulating the fabric of the world itself and essentially ending most technology-based limitations we have faced through history. And yet, we are unable to overcome our ego-based paranoia/separation to solve such relatively simple human problems as prejudice, famine and poverty, War, and the uglifying/poisoning of the planet organism which made us. The culmination of this is our recently acquired capacity to annihilate ourselves via the very technology we hoped would liberate us, if we are unable to awaken to a new consciousness on earth. This situation is tantamount to putting a loaded gun in the hands of a baby, massive power in the hands of an infant. Currently, media technology such as television are used primarily to distract, frighten, anaesthetize and sell to sheepy consumers. Medicine is advanced by profit and dread and denial of death. Untenable amounts of energy are diverted to the dysfunctional yet economically profitable attack-defend-oppress wargame of nations. We splice, modify and clearcut with little to guide us but a dollar sign. We are devouring the world, addicted to MORE, lost in the toxic delusion of separateness from each other and Nature. In this way we stay small, and we squander our magic as we hurtle blindly into a vague sense of "future". And yet at its essence, our species is good and innocent and in its infancy. We all sense, at a heart level, the potential within us to be more, both as individuals and as a human family. I also believe that sometimes, art should say something, that it is time for it to shed the dead skin of modern cynical nihilism and be reborn as a way to shift consciousness. These paintings are a jarring way of calling attention to ourselves and what we are doing and being, as well as a call to wake up and create balance.

Vic Sightings presents the work of Victoria-based photo and video artists who
explore skateboard culture from behind the lens. Featured artists Jay Zemanek, Matt
Gravel, Matt Macleod and Luke Connor will exhibit a set of recent photo and video
works that highlight the local sites and skaters, giving a special look at what goes into
landing the tricks and capturing the shots.
Skateboarders flow through the streets, alleys, parking lots ― finding spots ― grinding
rails, jumping stair sets, executing kickflips, hardflips and other forms of urban
shreddery. It is a wood-wheels-turning-system of movements mixed with a skaters
personal style. The photographer capturing the ride is having as much fun and thrills as
the skater. Technically, photographer and skater harmonize their skills to achieve the
perfect trick/photo combo.
Vic Sightings celebrates the local skate cultures identity and displays the great work
that people are making here. The project organizers are interested in showcasing
Victoria and how street skating exploits the city landscape and re-shapes the
architecture. The work of the artists in the exhibition will give face to the sites, skaters,
equipment and techniques used to make their art.
This project will run in conjunction with Wood for Rolling, an installation at Open Space
by artist Steve deBruyn (London, ON) opening on Friday, September 9 at 7pm.

Opening Reception - September 29th 7pm - 10pm Not So Easy Street and its counterpart show Easy Street will look at challenge as well as success in life through the eyes of a mixed group of Victoria and Edmonton artists. This traveling show will start in Victoria, B.C. for a three week exhibit at the Fifty Fifty Arts Collective, then will move to a converted off-sight space in Edmonton, AB. Each artist was asked to tackle a personal struggle of their choice. The range of dilemmas is broad and not limited too: communication breakdowns, unnecessary anxieties, lack of time, not getting into the NHL, or simply falling in love too much. This show aims to translate personal challenge into either a dismal, or light-hearted response. In asking artists from both cities to participate, we are looking at not only a personal challenge, but also the challenge between two cities. It is likened to being 10 years old, sitting in p.j.s, playing ninja turtles video games saying, my turtles colour is better than your turtles colour and in virtue of having chosen it, your own colour always wins the debate. Our city is better, because weve chosen it. Whichever side you choose in the face-off, were all in it together, each embedded in our own little challenge. Not So Easy Street/Easy Street, bring two Western Canadian cities together to have therapy.

Paper Shell is a collection of modular origami works by Ramona Struthers. The pieces in Paper Shell celebrate handmade craft and explore the potential of paper as a structural material. Ramona is interested in geometric structures and in the permutation of line, colour and text. The pieces in this show are made using pages from old books. In doing this, Ramona creates original juxtapositions of text; playfully questioning traditional definitions of literary interpretation. This is Ramona's first showing of origami work. She has previously published poetry in Edmonton's Notebook Magazine. Other written work has previously appeared in Vancouver's Memewar magazine, and in the Paper Shell anthologies at UBC Okanagan. She has a Bachelor's Degree in English. Opening Reception: October 27th, 7-10pm Runs through to November 17th

Fantasy Bears is a series of new illustrations by Stefan Thompson. The work has been put together over the late summer and early fall of 2011, which included his traveling time from Ottawa to the West Coast. The pieces are made with a focus on using Eco-friendly and or 'nontoxic' alternatives to conventional art materials. Beeswax, soot, crayons, recycled paper and homemade paints factor heavily into the work of Fantasy Bears. To learn more about making paints that are more environmentally friendly you can visit his website at www.stefanthompson.com. Taking obsolete analog formats and transforming them to illustrate a form of work relevant to its function (cassette tapes = music, VHS = movies, etc...), Albert Joaquin describes himself as a "part time" artist at best. In fact, he didn't even start making art until about a year ago. He is a cook by trade. Joaquin was initially drawn into working with this type of mixed media because it was so easily accessible; people everywhere were literally giving it away. Always fond of collecting movies and music, he came to wonder what one does when a newer and better format of technology has come and dominated? Unable to throw away these items and feeling that they still had a lot to offer, Joaquin has begun to transform the almost extinct media into stunning artistic pieces that represent their former use, while saving them from going to the landfill. art-a-la-bert.blogspot.com

CALL OUT TO ARTISTS The fifty fifty arts collective is working with Burnside Gorge Community Center to develop an arts program for the youth drop-in for males and females, ages 9 to 17. Youth programs and services build the assets of local youth that allow them to succeed and become contributing citizens. Burnside Gorge strives to build these assets in our youth by providing support, empowerment and constructive use of time. The aim of the arts program is to provide a non judgmental, non graded atmosphere where youth can learn and experiment with artistic media, build a portfolio, understand what it means to be an artist and have a good time. We want to exhibit the artwork made by the youth in the center, both as a way of sharing ideas and of taking ownership of the youth drop-in space. We also hope to have a public exhibition at the fifty fifty arts collective. As such we are looking for artists willing to contribute to the program by sharing their skills and experiences. Sessions will begin in mid to late January and will be for 2 to 3 hours on Wednesday evenings, held at the Burnside Gorge Community Center. Artists are not expected to contribute more that one session (though all the help we can get is most welcome). Photography, sculpture, graffiti/street art, painting, drawing, jewellery making, film and video, and collage are a some of the suggestions we have received that the kids at Burnside would like to learn about and all other suggestions are welcome. If you are interested please email us at [email protected] with a name and contact info and a suggested contribution. Thank you!

Originally, Spill (1 - Sunlight) was shown in an all white room, at the Vancouver Island School of Art, burnt out light bulbs a metaphor for sunlight spilling through an imaginary window. Illuminated from below by a single fluorescent source, the bulbs glowed preternaturally, light ricocheting off the walls. In Spill (2 - Window), at the Slide Room Gallery (group show Analog) a real window in the gallery space became the focal point for the spill of bulbs natural light and fluorescent played across the glass and out into the room. In Spill (3 - Veil ), reconfigured for the 50/50, the light bulbs are suspended vertically, completely filling the window. Lit from below and within, light is cast through the bulbs, forming a curtain. Inside the gallery, framed companion pieces lure us into the gallery and behind the veil. By turns meditative, playful and beautiful, the Spills are a light-hearted examination of perception. Rebekah holds a BFA (Theatre) and an MFA (Visual Art) both from the University of Victoria.

Canada is noted for being the worlds most multicultural nation. Residents immigrate from all over the world to share land and build policies. In this project, we visualize the idea of multiculturalism in Canada based on a sampling of one hundred people from the population. * 人: a Chinese word which pronounces as [in] and means people.

Performance Thursday, April 26th 7pm-10pm (feel free to drop in and experience as long or as little as you like) Reception Saturday, April 28th 7pm (view the installation, talk with the artist) And what to make of the wreckage is an installation and a performance. Serina walks, blindfolded, across the room, burning photographs and nailing the charred remains to the wall with red string; bloody footprints trail in her wake. The installation is the product of this process: burnt photos, a web of red string, footprints. This piece raises questions about memories, bodies, stories, and (im)permanence. Normally photos are taken as a way to remember and represent: they stand in for events and act as crutches for stories. Photos are supposed to tell stories of who we are, where weve been, what weve done, or where were going. So what happens when photos are destroyed as part of a process with no coherent narrative? Can art trace out the destruction of stories, rather than telling them? What emerges through this act of destruction? If the artist is blindfolded and bound to a process determined before the performance begins, then who (or what) produces the installation? Its often said that real creativity or spontaneity comes with the removal of all structures and barriers: we are invited to believe that great art comes when were free of all limitations. This performance proceeds from a different hypothesis: art, creativity, and vulnerability can come from the imposition of new restrictions and rules that impede normal movements. The artist will be blindfolded, she will not speak, and she will move in accordance with a predetermined design. These strictures make simple movements difficult, creating variation: stumbling, faltering, and tentativeness contaminate movements that are normally unproblematic and straightforward for a body to accomplish. And what to make of the wreckage that constitutes the installation? The string and footprints are residues of movements, but of what? If the performance destroys stories rather than telling them, what do we make of what remains? Maybe they help remind us that stories can never be erased or negated: even their destruction leaves a mark, and these traces tell a story themselves. Serinas art practice is not a solitary endeavour, instead it is an engagement with norms and habits through public performance, installation, community organizing, video and poetry. Her art is always a collaboration. Through her work, Serina looks at the ways in which we know the world and seeks to disrupt that which we take as a given. These interventions may happen in a public site or with an internalized norm, but through co-creation of meaning with the viewer her work becomes a catalyst for questioning. Morgana Wallace's art is intricately layered with references to history, culture, and mythology. Possessing a rare mixture of vibrant spontaneity and meticulous skill, her images brim over with energy and movement. Morgana's endless cast of strange and beautiful characters usher us into their imaginative and sometimes disquieting worlds. This body of work, Ambrus, is a tribute to Morganas favourite illustrators. Throughout her artistic life, she has been struck by the importance of illustration to the overall impact of the book, believing that illustrators deserve respect as legitimate artists. Now having compiled her own book of illustrations, Morgana pays homage to the illustrators who illuminated her imagination and taught her how to see the stories in images.

Deconstructed Architecture by Psychic Pollution :improving formula, through improvisation In a world where art and design is dictated by various computer assisted programs the art of freehand improvised architecture drawings is slowly fading. In its place you find stagnant examples of computer rendered drawings that remove some of the artistic aspects and meaning from free standing structure representations. Some of today's architectural mappings portray little human creative touch. Deconstructed architecture is a mixed media show featuring the works of Psychic Pollution aka local performance artist and musician Jzero Schuurman. In this exhibition Jzero will be crossing the lines of perfection by providing renditions of modern architecture using ink and paper drawings, architectural sculpture, video and ambient music. The exhibit explores the nagging human need for perfection by intentionally manipulating an art form that relies on convention, architecture drawing. The planned exhibition will host 18 ink and paper architectural drawings (all moderately priced), one video art piece exploring modern architecture creatively, and a few large scale abstract installations in the centre of the gallery using unused construction materials. The exhibit will also coincide with the release of Psychic Pollutions newest album entitled Deconstructed Architecture. This album can be heard and purchased opening night June 20th from 7-10PM. It will also be featured on the Psychic Pollution bandcamp page. The album comes in DIY screenprinted digipacks for $10 or you can purchase bandcamp downloads at the show for $3. http://psychicpollution.bandcamp.com/

MURMUR is the latest series of drumskin paintings by Canadian artist, illustrator and animator Aime van Drimmelen. Working exclusively on synthetic drumheads, that youʼd normally find on a bass or snare drum, this solo show studies the rhythm, motion and eccentricities of the Common Starling, an invasive species of bird that thrives in urban environments. MURMUR marks an exciting turning point for van Drimmelen, who for the first time combines her signature ink and water technique with hand drawn animated stills, studying every move these birds make with organic ink depictions that seek a commonality between them and ourselves. Native to Europe and Western Asia, starlings were first introduced to North America in 1890 by Eugene Schieffel, president of the American Acclimatization Society (a group that tried to introduce every bird species mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare to North America). Schieffel released 100 birds in New Yorkʼs Central Park, which quickly proliferated, causing havoc to native bird populations and becoming a continental scourge. Today there are an estimated 200 million starlings in North America. Starlings prefer urban settings and will aggressively displace native birds from their nesting sites. They are very vocal birds, constantly singing, chattering and mimicking other species. Before roosting, groups of starlings gather in sometimes staggering numbers, flying back and forth in a calculated cosmic ritual known as murmuring, which is both awe inspiring and terrifying to watch: http://vimeo.com/31158841. In a way we murmur also. Unique illuminated wall mounts made from actual drums will be a focal point for this exhibition, as well as works mounted on actual vintage marching band drums collected by the artist. Originals and limited edition prints will be available for sale at via the gallery and online. The artistʼs musical project The Backhomes will also perform at the opening. www.aimeevandrimmelen.com

This body of work focuses on the storytelling aspect of visual mark-making with an interest in the stories people share within the families and groups in which they belong. This work investigates the transformative nature of stories, and how they change as they are shared, reflected upon and grow. The fragility of memory and the healing power of the creative process challenge Caroline to make sense of the stories from her own history through the use of personal visual symbols. The process of creating imagery that investigates relationships and lived-circumstances offers a method in which to understand personal and collective experiences. This group of mixed-media paintings explores themes of loss, memory, grief, healing, identity and childhood. Caroline is encouraged to participate in the process of interpersonal storytelling through the methods that function for her and enjoys witnessing the stories of others, however they are expressed. Caroline is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and is currently completing a diploma in Art Therapy at the BC School of Art Therapy. Caroline has exhibited work in Halifax, NS and St. John, NB. Opening: August 23rd, 7pm - 10pm Everyone welcome, free to attend

Villa has been plagued with the urge to create from a very young age and over the years he has found 'art' to be the most effective cure. His work began with elaborate drawings depicting super heroes and idols of his youth that he laboured upon with fierce dedication. His appetite for creation has only increased with age and has evolved into producing painted epics. His desire has forced him to work on a grander scale using a vast arsenal of colour to attack blank canvas after blank canvas. Ultimately Villa strives to give his work life, forcing energy into each painting until it is no longer a static, 2D image. Villa pushes each painting to the furthest possible breaking point before it crumbles, exploring the subject matter to its core pulling every ounce of its soul to the surface. "My goal is to make the desensitized viewer actually feel something". Villa measures the effectiveness of his work by the energy it exudes, the actual emotion that the work conjures being less important to him than the act of impacting upon a viewer with a simple image. Runs Sept. 13th - Sept. 30th Opening reception: Sept. 13th, 7pm - 10pm 2516 Douglas St. www.mitchellvilla.ca!

Finding inspiration from the stories and illustrations that she grew up with as a child, people watching, creatures, and folklore, she hopes share her ideas with you. Through visual conversations she expresses her love of the playfulness of illustrations and the social aspect of story telling. This collection of pictures, entitled GUTS, is the beginning of sharing years of exploring the balance between positive and negative, the definition of home, secrets and truth, and simply what you consume or what consumes you. This is not a finished product. It's more the start of showing her ideas of what it would be like if we could see theses things, and everything that you would find hidden in-between. Closing Reception!! January 5th 7-10PM

Most recently my travels have taken me to Europe. A bicycle trip with my Mother was the impetus for the journey. We followed the Danube river from its source in southern Germany, to the heart of Austria, through Slovakia and into Hungary. What I discovered was a continuous, cultural thread of creative expression in the form of graffiti. These paintings illustrate a common theme of visual resistance in the form of graffiti. From small towns to large cities and even in the countryside, graffiti was always a reminder that we were never too far from human settlements. I couldn't help but wonder about the history of where we were travelling. What did it look like a hundred years ago or five hundred? How many people have travelled this route before us? By capturing the graffiti within the landscape on film, and then documenting with paint, my goal was to provide a visual record of our journey. The aim of this exhibition is not to advocate for or against the merits of graffiti. The aim is to highlight the fact that creative expression is an intrinsic part of what it means to be human. For thousands of years people have been writing on walls and it continues to this day. The walls may have changed and the marking tools may have evolved, but the one constant is that people feel compelled to express themselves. James Nye

Reception: Saturday, March 07. 2-6pm. Cate McGuire and James Nye: "Echoes". There are many points of intersection between the work of Cate McGuire and that of James Nye. The the most striking similarities are thematic. Both artists are exploring the parallels between inside and outside spaces. Each of them work with making the everyday uncanny, turning the typical into something unusual and at best, beautiful. Cate McGuire works with collage as a medium of construction. McGuire builds her collages out of the fragments of ordinary magazines and catalogues, to make a landscape of the interior that unfolds into the exterior. What this unfolding of the space does is show the power of the emotional bond we have with the landscape. It also reveals the ways in which we may actually perceive the places we inhabit through the minds eye. James Nye is a painter who employs traditional oil painting techniques in both a careful and direct way. He works at translating very complicated imagery, rooms or landscapes reflected back through glass, so that what might be a banal and ordinary scene is transformed into something more. The results are almost abstract and breathtakingly beautiful because they remind us of the simple but intangible tangle of our own lives. Together McGuire and Nye's work is strengthened because the root ideas of their practice are echoed between them.

When Paul Archer put a call out to local artists to design ceiling tiles for his studio, I contacted him right away. I was inspired to paint a Great Horned Owl I had the pleasure of meeting on my birthday in 2020. A portrait inspired by Daenerys, and the preservation of natural habitat for wildlife, now hovers indefinitely at the Archer Airbrushing studio in Victoria, BC.

My Luminiferous Series is an installation that was on display for an entire year in the interpretive centre at The Raptors in Duncan, which started in September of 2021. This gallery began with a launch show that took place on September 4th, and involved educational talks that featured a live American Kestrel and Western Screech Owl meet and greet. The launch show also featured the incredible artistry of Nusmata(A.K.A. Jarrod Saunders), an indigenous artist from Nuxalk Nation (Bella Coola).

Launched in 2020, the Takaya Lone Wolf International Arts Festival has featured artwork by over 50 local and international artists. It tells the story of a lone wolf who once lived on Discovery Island, just off the shores of Victoria. Back in 2014, I saw Takaya wandering the streets of Fairfield early in the morning. This connection and his story inspired me to paint a portrait of Takaya for my Luminiferous Series. My painting entitled "Takaya", was featured as part of the festival. This annual event took place on September 18th, 2021.

For the month of April(2022), I had a month-long installation of originals and framed prints from my Luminiferous Series at the Stadacona location of Shine Cafe. Shine Cafe has been a favourite breakfast spot of mine for a number of years, with their consistently delicious, gourmet benny menu. I was very excited for the chance to combine two things I love: My art and yummy breakfast!
