Lycia Trouton is an award winning artist who was selected for 2 international Biennales (China and Quebec) and a contemporary, generalist art historian (with a focus on trauma-in-art and material culture/visual art history and theory). Her work explores liminal spaces with both intellectual rigour and an experiential approach. As a sculptor, writer-critic, guest curator, presenter and visiting itinerant university/college (accredited Higher Education) lecturer, Dr. Trouton has had the opportunity to build community through her art. Her commemorative work about the Northern Irish Troubles (she was born in Belfast in 1967) has been acquired by the only accredited Peace Museum in the United Kingdom, in Bradford. See www.linenmemorial.org + www.linenmemorialcommunity.org
Lycia’s focus is often on the creation of work that touches upon social themes, such as sustainable living without war and natural disasters due to ecological issues. With her large-scale earthworks or land art & site-specific/site-conscious sculpture, she stretches our imagination with sheer physicality (moving dirt!), yet intimacy (textiles/the body/touch). Her exhibitions emphasize the peculiarity + preciousness of objects, together with the archival necessity of commemorating the genius of a story retold. See her major, charity, peace/ passion project, developed in 2000 with Canada Council of the Arts funding and toured in UK/Eire, Australia, Canada, Seattle and Kaohsiung (高雄), Southern Taiwan and Hangzhou (杭州), China with British High Commission, Canberra funding, with an Australian education grant https://www.peacemuseum.org.uk/blog/the-linen-memorial Collaborators in Australia were an original composition and choreography.
Born in a particular area of Belfast, Lycia experienced her early life in that area that held a quarter of the total cumulative deaths as a result of The Northern Ireland Troubles over 4o years into the millennium. Her family immigrated to Vancouver in 1970 and then lived for 10 years in the USA and 10 in Australia. Since 2017, she calls Victoria, BC home and recently held an Associate Research Fellowship at the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society, at the University of Victoria and was a PhD Assessor at Malmo Art School, in The University of Lund, Sweden. Dr. Trouton lectured and has completed art residencies in the UK, USA, South America, Asia and Australia. You can find her public art in the Seattle area and in Bradford UK and in digital form at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
