Pierre Dørge “New Jungle Orchestra”
JUNE 24 Vancouver East Cultural Centre
“An exotically hued, rhythmically vibrant music that is simultaneously sophisticated and accessible…one of jazz’s most consistently engaging big bands of the last decade.”—Down Beat
Formed in 1980 by Danish guitarist Pierre Dørge, the famous Copenhagen-based New Jungle Orchestra plays a creative and provocative fusion of world music styles rooted in jazz. The group’s name was inspired by Duke Ellington’s exotic jungle period at the Cotton Club in New York in the 1920s, where the bandleader wreaked havoc with his white audience by blending animal sounds of the jungle with the traffic noise of the city—trumpets, trombones, and saxophones mimicking simultaneously lion’s roars and automobile horns. The secrets behind the NJO’s musical success are to be found in leader Dørge’s abilities to absorb and mix the essences of jazz, cabaret, African highlife, and Asian and European traditions to create an ebullient global music. The nine-piece band is a worldwide sensation staging concerts that are wildly entertaining and listener-friendly. To quote Danish critic Jan Andersen, “Infectious joie de vivre, optimistic dance rhythms and artful provocation are central to the music of this orchestra.” With Irene Becker synthesizer, Gunnar Halle trumpet, Morten Carlsen saxophones/taragot, Jakob Mygind saxophones, Kenneth Agerholm trombone, Thommy Andersson bass, Ayi Solomon congas/percussion, Martin Andersen drums. The Pierre Dørge & New Jungle Orchestra 2007 Canada festival tour is sponsored and financially supported by the Danish Arts Council.
