Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid
JUNE 30 Commodore Ballroom
Adventurous London-based laptop artist/remix producer Kieran Hebden—perhaps better known by his recording alias Four Tet—is not afraid to push the boundaries of music. Since the late ’90s, his anarchistic, cut-up sample music sourced from hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk has appealed to both booty shakers and serious listeners. This is music notable for its rich, organic sounds and harmonious melodies, as well as for eschewing the traditional pop song format in favour of a more abstract approach. Two years ago, Hebden teamed up with legendary jazz drummer Steve Reid whose resumé includes work with Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Fela Kuti, Miles Davis, James Brown, Sun Ra, David Murray, and countless others. Since then, Reid’s visceral, polyrhythmic drumming and Kieran’s evocative electronics have been documented on three Domino recordings with Tongues being the latest. The duo’s live performances, which are full of stimulating dance dynamics, spacey jazz, and electro-funk, have been show-stealers at a host of festivals around the world. A hot double bill with Kid Koala. Thanks to the British Council.
