Vancouver’s Christ Church Cathedral Choir won the Church Choir category of the 2006 CBC/Radio-Canada National Radio Competition For Amateur Choirs, as well as a prestigious competition-wide award for the Best Performance of a Canadian Work. The choir had previously won the biennial competition in 1998, 2000 and 2002.Consisting of 30 skilled amateurs, this choir has a remarkably large and varied repertoire.
While the Cathedral Choir plays an important role in the larger choral community in Vancouver by joining with other choirs for works like Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand, Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia and Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil, op.37, its main function is to celebrate the Sunday Eucharist through hymns, psalms, and motets, along with choral and congregational mass settings.
A unique aspect of the choir is that from time to time it presents major choral works of such composers as Bach, Byrd, Duruflé, Kodaly, Palestrina, and Pärt in the context of Cathedral liturgies. For such special occasions, extra associate singers often join the ranks. In addition, the choir sings the weekly Sunday evening office of Compline and the monthly service of Sunday Evensong and is also host and lead choir for worship events in the Diocese of New Westminster.
