About

Phil Dwyer Sextet f. Laila Biali

2012 Juno winner for "Best Contemporary Jazz Album", Qualicum Beach's born Phil Dwyer has long been recognized as one of Canada’s preeminent
saxophone maestros (he’s also a great pianist, composer, and arranger). Dwyer has taken home the “Best Arranger” and “Best Saxophonist” trophies at the National Jazz Awards on several occasions and has been involved in some way with seven projects that have won Juno awards. Praised by Globe & Mail journalist Mark Miller for his “extraordi- narily authoritative playing,” Dwyer is one of the most
recorded musicians in Canada, having played with everyone from Moe Koffman to Aretha Franklin. His current project has him delving into the Canadian Songbook, boldly reinventing classic Canadian tunes by the
likes of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen with his jazz sextet. His companions for this exciting venture include Laila
Biali vocals/piano, Vince Mai trumpet/flugelhorn, Rob Piltch guitar, Jodi Proznick bass, and Davide Direnzo drums.
