The harp and recorder duo, Wind on the Waves (Lisa Szeker-Madden, Baroque recorders and Lillian Slanina, voice and Celtic lever harp), has been delighting audiences all over Victoria for a number of years with their fresh, unique sound. At times haunting and poignant, at times wickedly fun and deliciously fast, their original arrangements and compositions embrace the entire spectrum of musical styles and emotions.
Lisa began her musical life as a clarinettist, but switched to the recorder during her undergraduate degree after falling in love with the music of Telemann, Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. Sadly, the clarinet had not yet been invented when these composers were alive. She continued her studies in recorder during her Master's and Doctoral degrees in music, and is an early music specialist.
Lillian entered her undergraduate studies in music as a vocalist. Her mother felt this was a natural choice, since Lillian was always "the loudest of my children!" While continuing her vocal studies, Lillian took lessons on the orchestral harp at UBC. She purchased her unique, handmade harp from Laurie Niesch on Salt Spring Island, after a harrowing chase down a few country roads.
Wind on the Waves is ideally suited to a number of performance situations including: weddings, engagements, concerts, private celebrations, end of life, bereavement, or funeral services - anywhere a touch of beauty and elegance is needed.
