About

Vopli Vidopliassova

They are live legend of the Ukrainian rock-stage. The flamboyant Ukrainian outfit Vopli Vidopliassova was formed in Kyiv as early as 1987. The band has allegedly taken its catchy name (literally, the “Vidoplyasov’s wails”) from the novel titled The Village of Stepanchikovo and its Inhabitants by Dostoyevsky. There was a paranoid lackey Vidoplyassov who called his works, instinct with heartfelt cries, “the Wails”. The band was formed by guitarist Yury Zdorenko and bassist Oleksandr Pipa, previously of the heavy metal band SOS. 1986 was a crucial point for the musicians as they met vocalist Oleg Skrypka who was fond of playing the chromatic button accordion. Percussionist Sergey Sakhno became the fourth member of “VV”. At the rise of their career, the band got the most eloquent definition of their style, namely “a recuperated madhouse with a rural Ukrainian appeal” or the “Ukrapunk”. In autumn 1987, the band began to tour extremely: Vopli Vidopliassova played gigs at all kinds of rock festivals and proved out to be a huge hit, reaching the first positions. In 1990, the band had a tour of Europe, and their exotic Slavic charisma hit the taste of the European audience and especially the French, who had been so much fascinated by Oleg Skrypka’s show that in March 1990 they offered the band a contract for several releases. Only one thing remains unchanged at each new occurrence of these musicians - it is high quality and power of creativity. The charismatic Oleg Skrypka will break the internal protective borders of listeners and take them to the next level of feeling and perception. Their song "Vesna"(Spring), and afterwards the whole album of "Muzika"(music), created a real revolution in 1997 – millions and millions of people began to very loudly listen to Ukrainian alternative rock music. This music is so live that it tears not only the roof but also the walls. The group "VV" has recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of their creative life. As they say, a person never gets a burden heavier than he/she is able to lift and carry – and energy of this group would suffice for even a few more intense creative lives, to say nothing of their own. The disappointment is impossible as a category.
