Tierney Sutton Band
JUNE 22, 23 Performance Works
“A serious jazz artist who takes the whole enterprise to another level.”—New York Times
Ever since her major-label debut, Unsung Heroes (Telarc) in 2000, in which she took popular jazz standards that are usually performed instrumentally and put vocals to them (Clifford Brown’s Joy Spring, Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil, Dizzy Gillespie’s Con Alma), critics have been raving about Tierney Sutton. The California-based vocalist has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald for her exquisite intonation, bold rhythmic skills, and an ability to improvise with or without lyrics. Her 2004 release Dancing in the Dark, inspired by the music of Frank Sinatra, debuted in the Billboard Jazz Top Ten and remained on the charts for over 15 weeks. In 2005 she was named Vocalist of the Year by Jazz Week, while her first live album, I’m with the Band, was nominated for a Grammy award. Her latest release, On The Other Side, had the Los Angeles Daily News calling it “mesmerizing…one to hear.” A captivating performer, Sutton has recently sold out legendary New York venues like the Oak Room, Birdland, and Carnegie Hall. Don’t miss her Festival debut. With Christian Jacob piano, Kevin Axt bass, Ray Brinker drums.
