American students travelling and studying abroad in the last couple of years know a little secret. That secret is the Cat Empire, an astonishing Australian sextet that combines vintage keys, horns, tropical rhythms, funky bass, hip-hop vocals and turntables.
After years of success overseas, this past spring the Cat Empire finally brought its jazz-soul-rap-salsa-reggae hybrid to North America, where the band was greeted by rapturous audiences and critics. Its two albums, meanwhile, have earned the Cat Empire numerous Australian music award nominations, and Two Shoes—the group’s second record—debuted at number one and achieved platinum status in less than four weeks. But it’s the group’s live performances that have inspired the wildfire word-of-mouth buzz, as the Cat Empire’s continuous world tour and explorations into multiple genres have excited and thrilled audiences. To accommodate the band’s ever-growing legion of fans, a fall North America tour sees the band play bigger theatres for what promises to be even better shows.
