With all the advance hype, it’s tempting to say Be Your Own Pet is cursed before the four Nashville teens making up the group even have a chance. But darn if they don’t keep confounding, and surpassing expectations. While early demos caught the attention of tastemakers, leading to shows at CMJ and South by Southwest in 2004 as well as an endless stream of feature stories in magazines like Nylon (owing to, it must be said, the band’s heavy cuteness quotient), Be Your Own Pet has kept listeners on their toes with a steady stream of, to quote one reviewer, “very shouty, very feisty, very messy, and very good punk music.” Jemina Pearl’s voice (often compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O) whips through the guitar thrash and monster rhythms of her bandmates on tracks like “Damn Damn Leash”, “Bicycle, Bicycle” and “Let’s Get Sandy”—at 59 seconds of barely contained pop fury, perhaps the shortest song ever chosen as NME’s Track of the Week.
Sharing a love of T. Rex, Iggy and the Stooges, the Velvet Underground, and, in a more con-temporary vein, Animal Collective, the members formed Be Your Own Pet in 2003. The group released a number of EPs, including the Summer Sensation EP on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label and, more recently, a long-awaited full-length debut. And now, the band is taking its very feisty, very messy and very, very good live show on a North American tour.
