Event Description
Better known in North America as the lead singer of rock group Powderfinger, Bernard Fanning is a star in his native Australia. There, his debut solo album Tea & Sympathy is approaching five times platinum. He has an Australian ARIA No.1 debut to his name, the coveted No. 1 spot on the 2006 Triple J Hottest 100 with standout track “Wish You Well”, several sold-out tours under his belt and an APRA award for 2006 Australian Songwriter of the Year. The immensely popular Powderfinger has sold hundreds of thousands of records worldwide and garnered several Australian music awards as well for its melodic, Neil Young-inspired rock on albums like Internationalist and Vulture Street.
An effective mix of country, folk, blues and rock, Tea & Sympathy was co-produced by Fanning and Tchad Blake (Los Lobos, Tom Waits) and recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios. From the intricate finger-picking that underscores the weary-but-hopeful “Thrill Is Gone” to the fiddle-kissed “Songbird,” Tea & Sympathy has an unflagging organic vibe. Fanning’s compositions exude a quiet elegance and an affable confidence, the kind of qualities that speak of a career artist with across-the-board appeal. Nashville-based record label Lost Highway obviously thinks so—the label (home to the late Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson and Ryan Adams) has released Tea & Sympathy in North America. Bernard and a full band preview the disc with a number of intimate live shows in the U.S. and Canada that promise to lure in the thousands of Powderfinger fans here, and introduce his music to new listeners as well.
