With their 2003 record Ember to Inferno, Trivium announced itself as a contender for the crown of kings of thrash. Recalling the glory days of Slayer, Metallica, Pantera, and Testament, the debut caught the attention of Roadrunner Records. The respected label knew the promise of a great band and quickly signed the Orlando quartet. Ascendancy, the group’s first for the label, fulfills the six-year-old act’s potential, and then some. Expanding on Ember to Inferno’s strengths, the disc adds elements of prog-rock and death metal, along with more precise playing and improved songwriting. The result is a stunning record of fully integrated twin guitar harmonies and vocals that alternate from melodic to pained to full of rage.

They may not have done their algebra homework, but the members of Protest the Hero were learning something more important—the math of rock. Adding the intricacies of Iron Maiden to the advanced complexities of modern-day screamo, then dividing by the melodic sense and song structure of heavy metal classics, and you get records like the band’s Kezia. Canadian music monthly Exclaim! calls the four-year-old group, together since they were 14, “smart, original and undeniably catchy.”

The Sword is a metal band based out of Austin, Texas, a city known for its country, blues, and roots, as well as the South by Southwest Music Conference. It was at that event that author and Spin Magazine music writer Chuck Klosterman (Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs) witnessed The Sword live, prompting him to proclaim the group as the best thing he saw at the 2005 conference, saying they sound “like a bunch of bison being pushed over a cliff.”
