Victoria Folk Music Society weekly gathering: Everyone—welcome Jam at 6:45pm, Open Stage at 7:30pm, Feature Performers Awakeneers at 9:00pm; Norway House, 1110 Hillside Avenue, $8 cash at the door

A nomadic tribe of multi-instrumentalist songwriters currently based on Cortes Island, Awakeneers' timeless yet contemporary folk sound centres on honest vocals sweetened with multi-part harmonies and acoustic instrumentation. Since their early days as small-town buskers, this unique musical family has toured North America and Europe by sailboat and by van, playing for folk clubs, festivals, ecovillages, and congregations of all faiths. They weave a genre-bending blend of acoustic positivity that orbits elliptically around the idea of folk music. Segueing from a foot-stomping fiddle tune to a hip-hop guide to mindfulness to a meditative love song for Mother Earth, Awakeneers’ music is honest, rich, and diverse. Their songwriting shines a light on life's big questions, celebrating the goodness of humanity and the miracle of life on earth.
