Corb comes by his affinity for country music honestly—he was raised on a farm in Alberta. It’s taken him awhile to come back to his roots, but it’s natural that, after 12 years fronting indie punk sensations The Smalls, he would find his way to the kind of music that, while more traditional, becomes in his hands just as rebellious and rip-snorting as the work of his former band.
A perennial crowd-pleaser, Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans rockin’ country hootenannies have become legendary west of the Pecos, and beyond. This time out Corb has a new record, the gold-selling Hair in My Eyes Like a Highland Steer, which won a Juno for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year—an honour that will sit nicely on the mantel next to Corb’s win for Entertainer of the Year at this year’s Western Canadian Music Awards. A much-anticipated release that follows up his gold record for Five Dollar Bill, the new disc includes guest legends Ian Tyson and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and runs the gamut of roots music styles, from western swing to country-rock to ragtime and acoustic blues. Fun, sing-along rodeo anthems like “Hurtin’ Albertan” and “The Truck Got Stuck” sit comfortably next to wistful, moving songs such as “The Truth Comes Out”.
