Try pinning a label on Hank Williams III and you’re apt to be wasting your time. “Hard twang”, “punkabilly”, “cowpunk”, “alternacountry”, “slacker swing”, “hillbilly” and “honky punk” have all been applied to the grandson of Hank Williams (and son of Hank Williams Jr.) at one point or another, but the truth is Hank—or “III”, as he’s sometimes called—does what he wants. Whether that’s releasing his third studio album Straight to Hell as a two-disc set or playing with former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo in his side-project Superjoint Ritual, the Nashville-raised star is a true musical rebel—and one who’s finally getting the attention he deserves.
The reason for this is Straight to Hell, a record that has announced III as a wicked songwriter, singer and musician. That record, along with word of his rabble-rousing, anything-can-happen live shows (he was recently joined onstage in L.A. by Glenn Danzig) with his Damn Band and punk metal group Assjack, has made Hank one of the most talked-about artists of the last year. Though some might come out to see Hank III because they’re curious, or because they love listening to the music of his dad or grandfather, they always leave satisfied that Hank is a barn-razing talent in his own right.
