Hot on the heels of the acclaimed reissues of three of his most formative discs, the Bard of Barking returns to Vancouver for another rowdy evening of strikingly moving songs and acerbic humour. Long one of the foremost practitioners of a stripped-back, electric brand of folk, Billy Bragg has combined the traditions of Pete Seeger and Phil Ochs while adding a turn-up-the-electric-guitar attitude of defiance. Records like 1986’s Talking with the Taxman About Poetry are angry, witty and passionate record and touch on classic soul, protest, and punk influences.
Over the years Billy Bragg has been a tireless spokesman for favourite causes and a craftsman continually honing his songwriting and recording abilities. Tunes like “Levi Stubbs’ Tears”, “Sexuality”, “A New England” and “Accident Waiting to Happen” have helped place Billy at the forefront of mod Brit songwriters like Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson.
Since the release of his last studio album England, Half English, with The Blokes, Billy Bragg has been busy putting together a live-album, a retrospective disc and a boxed set, with all of this activity culminating in another eagerly awaited series of live dates.
