Australia's greatest pop rock sensation plays shows to launch their debut album 'Gravity Won't Get You High'
After several EPs, singles and headlining and support tours, The Grates have certainly stoked anticipation for their full-length debut, Gravity Won’t Get You High. The good news is all that buzz and advance enthusiasm is vindicated by the record. In fact, there’s a good chance you won’t hear a catchier collection of alterna-pop this year.
Accompanied by Alana Skyring’s insistent drumming and John Patterson’s rocking guitar, Patience Hodgson’s stunning voice (think a poppier Kathleen Hannah) careens through awesomely hooky tunes like “I Won’t Survive”, “Lies Are Much More Fun” and “Rock Boys”. With songs like these, it’s no wonder the band has become a sensation in its native country and is on its way in the UK—back home, Gravity Won’t Get You High debuted on the ARIA charts at no. 9 and their national headline tour sold out across the country.
In the UK, the fizzy, feisty blast of aggro-pop that is “19 20 20” has already had support from Radio 1, MTV2 and XFM, and the band has been selected to play a series of NME club shows. Then, it’s on to North America, where audiences are bound to discover what Australia has known for over a year—The Grates are among the freshest, hookiest and most exuberant pop bands anyone’s heard in ages.
