The Hard and the Easy, the follow-up to last year’s Something Beautiful, is Great Big Sea’s eighth release and hit gold status in its second week of release. The Hard and the Easy spans the spectrum of the Newfoundland songbook. Melancholic, heroic and sweet, featuring songs about seafaring, logging, horses, ponds, ice, pirates, mermaids, infidelity, love, sexuality, and the dreaded cod liver oil; it’s the first Great Big Sea album to consist entirely of traditional songs. Live, Great Big Sea feeds off the enthusiasm of the audience, adding more power and urgency to their gorgeous harmonies, thumping rhythms and rollicking folk tunes. Don’t miss Great Big Sea when they return to Vancouver.
