Event Description

By Storm is a dynamic and unlikely collective of
artists who make their home on Hornby Island. Brought together by friendship and geographic confinement, this adventurous group formed with interest and respect for each other's diverse and multiple talents, posing the question, "what would this collaboration look like?"

Each artist in By Storm draws on their experiences of choosing to live on this small island, away form the mental static of thousands of other minds. This contributes to diverse and intense creation, which By Storm exhibits, drawing on influences such as folk music, spoken word, jazz, punk and electronica in conjuction with interactive and movable imagery.

PERFORMERS:

Laundromat
Laundromat is a duo that combines raw percussion and melodic guitar with a variety of electronically generated sounds unlikely to be found in a musical context. For the past 2 years, Tony Wilson and Michael Lobban have created music ranging from spacey rock to gentle, introspective compositions to full out electronic insanity. Michael Lobban (drums, laptop computer) has been experimenting with music and digital audio for over a decade, keeping to himself, mostly. Tony Wilson (guitar, kora, harmonica, electronics) has been performing for over 20 years. His adventurous playing and beautiful compositions have garnered critical acclaim around the world.

Cimarron Knight
Music videos. Fishing tales. The latest novel. Reminiscences. Story telling takes many forms. Intrigued by story, both cultural and personal, Cimarron Knight is exploring relationships, modern love and fairytales through visual narrative, short composition and installation. Her artwork analyzes the common threads of human vulnerabilites and experiences that run through all tales. She questions if an individual's notion of personal truth and self identity reinforces social conditioning. An active member of the art community, Cimarron lives and works full time on Hornby Island where she is currently creating the alter ego of cim cim de la nuit to be an ever changing feature character in her work.

Pest
Pest is a wharf rat, a shape-shifter whose contorted, distorted view of life can be attributed to such influences as her nomadic origin, fireball whiskey and poverty. With tantalizing intensity and searing vocal resonance, Pest's stage show combines punk, poetry and circus to create a stunning feast of sound and visuals. Whether standing on a wood-round outside the Hornby Island community hall animating poetry, or thrashing with her punk band Prink Insurgency or armed with two fists, an acoustic guitar and a voice of absurdity and rage, Pest demands your attention because she's poor, she's punk, she's perplexed and she has something to say about it. So listen.

Melisa Devost
Melisa Devost is a songwriter/performer whose muscial style varies from blues-tinged heaviness to heartfelt agnostic gospel to quirky folk-pop. She writes introspective and observant songs about life patterns and choices, love or lack of, and the refinements of what it means to be human on this planet. Combining fingerstyle guitar, drawing influences mainly from country blues and folk music, with a voice that has been described as "powerful, beautiful and dynamic," Melisa weaves her tales of woe and whoa! into a show that is engaging and emotionally stirring. She makes her home in the small rural communtiy of Hornby Island, claiming that it keeps her honest.
