Event Description
Victoria Folk Music Society weekly gathering -- Everyone welcome jam 6:45pm, Open Stage 7:30pm, Feature Performers Backyard Boulevard at 9pm; Norway House, 1110 Hillside Avenue, $8 cash at the door
When COVID kicked live music outside, James Anstey (banjo) and Mark Johnson (bass) started jamming on their Vic West backyard boulevard. Neighbours Susan Ellenton and Robert Anderson soon jumped the fence, bringing along their accordion, guitar, bouzouki, and upbeat original songs and a band was born! Newest member, Blair Mitchell (hand percussion) brings a fresh kick to the group whose members have headlined the Calgary Folk Festival, won several songwriting contests, and toured festivals from Alaska to Mariposa to Newfoundland. You can expect shanty-like participation songs, stunning a capella tunes, ballads about local events like the short-lived gold rush in Sooke, and beautiful songs based on local nature. That and so much more! Thoughtful lyrics, exciting band arrangements, and singing-your-heart-out choruses — could we ask for anything better?
