Event Description

The award-winning Viano Quartet returns to Victoria! This distinguished ensemble will present a program that bridges the emotional depth of the past with the innovative sounds of the present.

Experience the haunting beauty of Barber's String Quartet in B Minor, Op. 11 — a piece that has moved audiences worldwide with its poignant lyricism and timeless elegance. Alistain Coleman's Moonshot is a vibrant work inspired by humanity's ambition and the awe of space exploration. This contemporary piece captures the spirit of adventure and the unknown, reflecting on the boldness that drove the Apollo missions. Next, delight in the lush harmonies and dynamic contrasts of Ravel's String Quartet in F Major, a work that blends elegance, wit, and innovation. With its shimmering textures and rhythmic vitality, this quartet is a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire.

ABOUT THE QUARTET

Praised for their “virtuosity, visceral expression, and rare unity of intention” (Boston Globe), the Viano Quartet is one of the most sought-after performing young ensembles today and is currently in-residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Bowers Program from 2024-2027. Since winning First Prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, they have traveled to nearly every major city across the globe, captivating audiences in New York, London, Berlin, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Paris, Beijing, Toronto, Lucerne, and Los Angeles. In summer 2023, the Viano Quartet released Portraits, its debut EP, on the Curtis Studio Label. The quartet has held artist residencies at Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, Curtis Institute, and Colburn Conservatory, and have taught masterclasses at institutions such as Duke University, Northern Michigan University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of British Columbia. Recently, they’ve been selected as the inaugural group for a new guest residency at the Music in the Morning series in Vancouver until 2025.
