Event Description

The Victoria Blues Society is pleased to offer a workshop on blues music with Jack Lavin, David Vest and Dr. Jim Martens. The workshop will be held at Hermann’s Jazz Club 753 View Street on Tuesday, October 8th at 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Bar service will be available.

We have assembled a wonderful panel who will be talking about the history of the blues and “stories from the road” about wonderful blues artists they have known or worked with. The panel presentation will be followed by an opportunity for questions and answers.

This will be an informative and entertaining evening all about the blues!

This workshop is FREE for Victoria Blues Society members and $10 for non-members (cash only). Because we can only accommodate limited numbers in the venue, pre- registration is mandatory. Please contact Deb Rhymer [email protected] to register and reserve your seat.

Our wonderful presenters:

Jack Lavin

Native Chicagoan Jack Lavin left home at age 15 and has been performing blues music ever since. A multi-instrumentalist (bass, guitar, harmonica, drums), Jack was a founding member of the legendary Powder Blues and wrote many of their hits.

Jack has backed lots of blues greats including John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Otis Rush, Taj Mahal, John Hammond, Lazy Lester, Fenton Robinson, Amos Garrett and many more. A Juno Award winner (Powder Blues-Best New Band) and also nominee (Composer of the Year for his song Thirsty Ears) Jack founded and presided over the Vancouver Blues Society from '85-'87. He continues to write, produce, record and perform, and is presently working on his memoir.

David Vest

The son of an Alabama sharecropper, longtime Victoria, BC resident David Vest is still going strong 50 years after he first stepped on stage with the likes of Big Joe Turner. Long revered as one of the great boogie-woogie piano players, David is a six-time winner of Canada's national Maple Blues Award for Piano Player of the Year.

David is also a prolific songwriter. He wrote the first songs ever recorded by Tammy Wynette, and his tunes have been covered by artists ranging from Paul deLay to the legendary Downchild Blues Band, whose cover of Vest's "Worried About The World" gave Downchild their first number-one song. Whether working solo, with his band or appearing in spectacular "pianorama" shows, he continues to bring audiences to their feet and to demonstrate why he has been called “one of the greatest living boogie-woogie piano players.”

Jim Martens

Jim Martens has a vast knowledge of music, particularly the blues. He has a PhD (history), BA (hons) University of Winnipeg, MA (thesis: 1832 Jamaican Slave Rebellion) University of Waterloo, PhD (thesis: Rugby and English Society 1873 - 1914) University of Manitoba.

In addition to teaching classes on blues history, Jim regularly publishes on aspects of popular culture as forms of resistance, especially music. His most recent publication publication was “African American Female Singers in the Age of Liberal Reform” in The Routledge Companion to Humour and Popular Music. For twelve years, Jim has been the host of the popular CFUV radio show “Blues in the Morning."
